An example when I faced a major challenge was when coming to the United States. Going to school quickly became a nightmare for me. I was uncomfortable with the fact that others were ahead of me and were able to communicate at a higher level than I was. At a very young age I began to think of myself as someone who couldn’t grasp something simple as speaking the language I was expected to. I was assigned extra help and had to constantly take exams that measured my level of learning and how well I was making progress. This often made me doubt by academic abilities since I kept falling behind in school. On top of that mathematics was a subject that was difficult for me to master. Both these challenges required huge amounts of effort for my to combat. Countless hours spent with teachers, tutors, and also hours spent at home reviewing and perfecting my skills in English and Mathematic. My work paid off during my freshman year of high school I was able to earn two certificates of recognition in both English Honors 9 and in Geometry. My mom were often told I would be needing extra help. They were told that school would be difficult. Earning these two certificates demonstrated that I was able to rise above the obstacles I was put through. I felt proud that I was finally given a physical representation of my hard work. These certificates showed me that all the struggles i went through growing up were worth it and that I wasn’t as brainless as I was made to feel. This year I was …show more content…

We discussed a few different topics such as what his life was like being a kid, what he thought of school, and how he knew my grandmother was the one for him. It sometimes got off tracks talking about his children and what happened to them, but for most of the time we stayed on topic. We talked a lot about what life was like and his jobs and his life overall. This interview started about his life in Tennessee and it wasn't easy for him back then, he had to walk miles to school and his dad wasn't around very often.…

For example, I had to learn how to take care of my younger siblings, and to be responsible for anything like paper from the county for renewing medical and food support, to filing taxes and mortgage papers when we had finally saved enough for a home. Every day was a struggle trying to fit into a foreign culture that I knew nothing of, and which held different values than my own. For example I have struggled with the materialistic nature of American Culture, especially when many of own people from our community had no way to afford many of the things held so valuable here. Yet through all of this, I knew I couldn’t give up, and I would have to lead as an example for my little siblings and other young people in my community. As years pass by I continue to grow and every decision in the family runs through me.…

Michael Jordan once said, “Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” Being born to two immigrants, who have never completed college, and growing up in a low-income family of six individuals, I have faced nothing but a myriad of obstacles in my life. Although at times I have struggled to overcome these challenges, I have always persevered and pushed past each one with my determination to be the best I can be, which has matured me into the young adult I am today.…
