Love may be a puzzling concept that is complex to understand. Love is unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another. Love can be seen as a strong affection for another derived out of kinship or personal ties; however it can also be evident in the devotion to a person, or a way of life. In the short stories “Killings” and “A Rose for Emily” both demonstrate different forms of love, and the outcome of what love can lead too. Love of one's personal ideals impairs one's capacity to see their weaknesses and faults.…

The father will go as far as not having a fire at night in order for them not to be seen by travelers on the road: “He could find no safe place to make a fire” (176). The people along the road are very dangerous and try to kill the father and boy multiple times. One day the boy had been kidnapped and the father shot the man within seconds of the boy being taken away: “The man had already dropped to the ground and he swung with him and leveled the pistol and fired from a two-handed position balanced on both knees at a distance of six feet”…

Love is what keeps the man going for as long as he goes on. His love for his son is the reason that he keeps trying to live and even states that the "boy was all that stood between him and death"(McCarthy 29). The man believes that dying would actually be better than living in a world like the one he lives in, but he loves his son too much to let him die. Spirituality is also seen in The Road. In the beginning of the novel, the man states that if the boy "is not the word of God God never spoke" (McCarthy 5).…

In the final moments of The Road, by Cormac McCarthy the son’s father dies from presumably, a lung cancer. I am questioning weather the son and his “new” family were going to live or die within the next year, after the sons dad dies. The first option I am going to talk about is weather the son is going to live. Some reasons they are going to win is that the son and dad killed off the blood cult. With no cult there is a great chance of surviving.…

Love will survive all is a common theme in literature, but even more common is the ‘forbidden love’ archetype. In the novel Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen and the movie The Notebook by Jeremy Levin, people sometimes listen to their hearts rather than their brains. Love is powerful force that can give both strengths and weaknesses, it can make one do unexpected things and holds the ability to change the course of one’s whole life. Through theme and symbols love is shown to endure through time, problems, and separation. To begin, love is shown to face many problems in both stories.…

In many instances, the boy pushes the man to help people they see along the way on the road. Even though the man continues to reject the boy’s pleas, the boy continues to have a kind heart for everyone. The boy is very young and has encountered situations that grown adults in today’s world could never fathom experiencing. Even through this, the boy continues to “carry the fire” and is a “bringer of light in the darkness” that overcomes the world (McCarthy 83; Sanchez). The boy eventually “adopts a leadership role” over the man and encourages the man to “preserve a charitable spirit in McCarthy’s amoral wasteland” (Sanchez).…

Something that comes to mind when we think of a road is choices, the twists and turns that the road has are just like the perils that boy and his father have to face in this novel, the bitter cold, starvation, death and sickness. And of course roads remind us of forks in the road, the decision making turns, when we have to choose between going one way or another, choosing the right path or the wrong path just like the two sets of people in the book, the “good guys” who choose the right path of moral ethics and selflessness and the “bad guys” who choose the wrong path that leads to destruction and chaos. So the theme of good versus evil is very evident in this book. It highlights the worst things that we are capable of doing when we realize…
