“‘Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.’(Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 NIV).” Having a friend is having someone to help you through life. That can make life a lot more bearable, but without a friend, the loneliness you are left with makes you feel like you are working for nothing. Loneliness can break a man’s will and spirit, but having a friend is the medicine that can cure that loneliness. Alone, people may feel lost and not have a plan. Many of the characters in Of Mice and Men go through a period of not having any friends, and they’re filled with loneliness. They quickly try to fill this …show more content…
Lennie has a mental disability that puts him in a vulnerable position for someone to gain power over him. When Crooks asks, “You travel aroun’ with George, don’t ya?”(), he realizes that Lennie needs George to live. He decides to toy with Lennie and test what he would do without George, asking, “S’pose George don’t come back no more. S’pose he took a powder and just ain’t coming back. What’ll you do then?”(). This idea of George not coming back to him sends Lennie into a panic. Crooks realizes Lennie is truly terrified of the idea of George not coming back, when, “He stood up and walked dangerously toward Crooks”(). This highlighted the dependence Lennie has on George, Lennie likes his relationship with George. George has no mental disability, but he still has a dependence on Lennie that is hard to explain. Lennie often times ruins George’s opportunities, and George acknowledges this, saying, “When I think of the swell time I could have without you, I go nuts.”, but when Lennie offers to, “go off in the hills there. Some place” and leave George alone, George assures Lennie that, “No—look! I was jus’ foolin’, Lennie. ’Cause I want you to stay with me.” George doesn't need Lennie to survive, and on paper, he would be better off without Lennie, but he chooses to stay with him, because their friendship keeps them from being lonely. Candy looses his friendship with his dog and is devastated, until he joins the dream of getting a farm with George and Lennie. Crooks is discriminated against and left alone,but even when he is given the chance to join a new farm, he turns down the offer because he doesn't believe it can really happen. Lennie and George are both stronger together and depend on each other. Without friendship, the characters simple are not happy or satisfied. The same is true in real life as well. friendship is a very important part of feeling complete, and without it, people are lacking a part of human nature. Having a friend to talk to can make much more of a difference than what one may think. Loneliness is common and life is tough, but with a friend, living life becomes a little easier and less
