Many people wish to live a good, healthy life and live to be one hundred years old. The only problem is that they don’t want to do the work that comes with living a long life. Hearing the words diet and exercise almost scares them away from the thought of being a healthy individual. Almost thirty five percent of adults are considered to be overweight or obese in the Unites States (CITATION?). Many of them are at risk of many diseases that come with being overweight or obese. Preventing some of those diseases is as simple as changing what and how they eat. Although being obese is normally caused from eating poorly, you can also be at an ideal weight but still not eat the right foods or get the right nutrients in your body. As Morgan Griffin from WebMD says, “Eating whole foods is a healthier option than processed foods.” Choosing which foods you should eat more often and foods you should save for a special occasion are very important. An easy way to know what you should eat is by simply reading the label. That way you can see what nutrients you are getting from your favorite snack or meal. After reading the label thoroughly you can then decide whether you should keep eating that snack as often as you do or make it a “once a week” item. For example, instead of eating a chocolate bar every day, eat an apple or any fruit that will give you the nutrients you need. Calories, sodium, carbohydrates, and sugars are items you need to be aware of while reading the label of your snack. The average person needs to consume 1500 calories a day to maintain a healthy lifestyle. By checking the labels you are able to calculate how many calories you are consuming daily. Taking dietary supplements isn’t a healthy option to lose weight or get on track. You might lose a few extra pounds but you gain more diseases. Many diet pills have warning labels on them, warning you about diseases you can get by taking the pills daily. Liver disease, gall bladder infections and kidney disease are many consequences of wanting to lose a few pounds. The only thing you should take in the form of a capsule is vitamins. If you can’t eat your daily amount of fiber or Omega 3s for example, it is okay to take them in capsules. Once again like any food, make sure you do research about what you’re putting in your body. Just because you take vitamins for an extra boost of health, being on a diet is an essential part to start your healthy lifestyle, but if you’re planning to stick to this lifestyle for the rest of your life, its best to choose a flexible menu that you will stick to.
