The first is about appropriately displaying key information in the form of PowerPoints and other mediums. One of the major uses of literacy for shops is the use of signage and how it is designed to display information for customers. Taking what I learned from my observation, graphics such as colours, pictures and certain words can be used to influence emotion and get attention (Nobre, Allison & McCarthy, 2008). And these things tend to overpower any other information around it. Therefore, whilst designing my PowerPoints, worksheets and presentations in a VCE P.E setting, I need to ensure I use these aspects of visual literacy to effectively communicate key information I want students to engage with (Turbill, 2002). These designs should be of ‘friendly’ colours and font which promote positive feelings towards the content (Ou et al., 2004). If students feel empowered and optimistic about the content, learning will be much more meaningful (Pekrun, Goetz, Titz & Perry, …show more content…
Such as communication between the operator and someone who has a separation via a language barrier, compared to how they approach communication with someone they are familiar with. Whilst teaching, I may have a situation where I have students who speak English as a second language and/or come from a cultural background I am unfamiliar with. Thus, presenting a challenge of how to ensure my teaching reaches these students, as well as they, do any other. Thankfully, academic literature such as paper by Delpit (2006) highlights the consequences of isolating students with different backgrounds and the importance of coming to an understanding of these backgrounds. Therefore, instead of sitting there in silence and only explaining what I need to, (like the flybuys situation) I will attempt to respectfully connect with each student’s cultural background and life outside of school. This creating of relationships between students and teachers, according to Crosnoe, Johnson & Elder’s (2004) study, leads to a mutual respect which results in more effective learning and teaching. Another reflection I made by watching the two different checkout interactions. Was how obvious it was that the operator engaged each situation in a different manner. This included their inflexion of their voice, eye contact, a smile and other small details. If I can notice that, I will always assume that my
