One of the most common literacy concepts at the supermarket are the price tags. Operationally, they include the colour yellow, big bold words saying ‘special’ and have big numbers showing the price of the item. In addition, they include the items name in a fine print and a date which tells staff when the deal is over. In Australian culture, the colour yellow and the use of the word special has a specific purpose to get the customers attention (Nobre, Allison & McCarthy, 2008). Despite being the most apparent part of the tags they hold little information, however, the customer knows that this is where they will save money. Interestingly, the meaning they receive from these aspects also cause emotion (Ou et al., 2004). The feeling of saving money …show more content…
The first is about appropriately displaying key information in the form of PowerPoints and other mediums. One of the major uses of literacy for shops is the use of signage and how it is designed to display information for customers. Taking what I learned from my observation, graphics such as colours, pictures and certain words can be used to influence emotion and get attention (Nobre, Allison & McCarthy, 2008). And these things tend to overpower any other information around it. Therefore, whilst designing my PowerPoints, worksheets and presentations in a VCE P.E setting, I need to ensure I use these aspects of visual literacy to effectively communicate key information I want students to engage with (Turbill, 2002). These designs should be of ‘friendly’ colours and font which promote positive feelings towards the content (Ou et al., 2004). If students feel empowered and optimistic about the content, learning will be much more meaningful (Pekrun, Goetz, Titz & Perry, …show more content…
Such as communication between the operator and someone who has a separation via a language barrier, compared to how they approach communication with someone they are familiar with. Whilst teaching, I may have a situation where I have students who speak English as a second language and/or come from a cultural background I am unfamiliar with. Thus, presenting a challenge of how to ensure my teaching reaches these students, as well as they, do any other. Thankfully, academic literature such as paper by Delpit (2006) highlights the consequences of isolating students with different backgrounds and the importance of coming to an understanding of these backgrounds. Therefore, instead of sitting there in silence and only explaining what I need to, (like the flybuys situation) I will attempt to respectfully connect with each student’s cultural background and life outside of school. This creating of relationships between students and teachers, according to Crosnoe, Johnson & Elder’s (2004) study, leads to a mutual respect which results in more effective learning and teaching. Another reflection I made by watching the two different checkout interactions. Was how obvious it was that the operator engaged each situation in a different manner. This included their inflexion of their voice, eye contact, a smile and other small details. If I can notice that, I will always assume that my

Doing clinical observations are very important because it gives a change to see student and teacher interactions first hand and get to see how well a student is responding. During my observations at Biddeford Intermediate School, I got the change to shadow an Ed. Teach in a life skills room. This was a great opportunity for me because it was a chance to see another kind of intervention done in the special education department. I have done many observations with an occupational therapist, and they have always been in lighting and very educational, but to visit a life skills room gave me more perspective on the special education department as a whole.…

In addition to the strategy that ACARA offers Lenz & Adams (2006) provide comprehensive analysis of the planning of units in regards to using graphic organisers to encourage inclusive learning. Students will be able to engage more with lessons they can understand and relate to content they have previously been taught. With each lesson plan, introduce the content of the lesson to the class so the students receive an outline: Firstly how the students are able to relate to the lesson taking into consideration real-life applications, next how the students are able to relate this content, to other content topics they have previously learnt. Then the teacher needs to outline what is to be learnt, and identify the learning goals for all students as well as to ensure that students identify their own learning goals. After that the teacher needs to set out a structured and sequenced learning task that will engage students, finally the teacher should summarise the content covered and plan for post-lesson…

The content material that stood out to me most this week of that of the Ted Talk of the experiences of Japanese Americans during the war and also the experiences of Native Americans. I think this is extremely beneficial to my learning process as I frequently consider the perspectives of the African American and Latino population, but rarely are the experiences of Asian Americans and Native Americans at the forefront of my mind. In addition, the Classroom Divided was also impactful as I have also seen videos with Jane in the past and her work is greatly depicts the oppression and discrimination experiences by minority groups. The usage of the blue eyed vs brown eyed people experiment is extremely powerful and a great representation of what…

I spoke with Liam's mom this afternoon and explained his situation to her. She will talk to Liam about the safety issues of leaving the classroom, the building and school grounds. Although she agreed that Liam may be leaving his classroom mainly to escape his academic work, she also believes that he may be frustrated with adjusting to constant changes in his support and making connections to different EAs. I told her that less support may be actually beneficial to Liam and can help him to increase his independence, especially as he is transitioning to middle school. However, Liam's constant escaping from classroom means serious safety concerns.…

Communication is an essential part of graphic design. Public signs, utility signs, and road signs are examples of how a design communicate the information with the use of graphical elemtns. As up in coming graphic designers, it is important for us to understand how we should approach informative design; creating something that is just aesthetically pleasing won’t be an effective tool for the public to utilize in everyday life. A perfect example of how communication was integrated in design is Massimo Vignelli’s design of New York subway map of the 1970’s. Massimo Vignelli’s redesign of New York subway map brought a graphic solution to the Metropolitan Transit Authority’s over-detailed maze-like map.…
