Reading and comprehension are important factors in teaching people. If someone cannot read, then it is not useful to give them paper instructions. If someone cannot comprehend something, then you may have to simplify the way that you are describing something. Certain situations within the disease process or treatment process can affect the way that people can comprehend and read. Sometimes people can be computer illiterate, and not know how to use or comprehend a computer. There are trends within the illiteracy issues, and they are continuing today. Resources can be utilized to help these individuals suffering from illiteracy. Stereotypes are associated with being illiterate and not being able to read or write, which is usually a bad stereotype. These need to be avoided and using resources for support are encouraged. There are signs that you can watch for whenever you do an assessment, which is very important to assess due to the amount of teaching that we use through paper. I use team-based learning within my classes. Cooperative learning is used within my facility to help promote the use of new skills. We can use seminars to help teach about certain topics, especially how to diffuse situations. We use one on one instruction with our patients to help them learn about certain teaching instructions. Demonstration is used to make sure our patients know certain procedures. We do simulations with our neonatologist to help with our skills in a hard situation. We use role modeling to make sure that our patients are providing safe care by giving them safe care throughout their stay. Role playing can be used to help them mimic what they can do at home. We give our patients IPADs to help them with self-teaching, then we answer any questions that they have. I can use all of these within my practice in a variety of appropriate settings, and then I will evaluate the materials to make sure they learned what they needed to
