In particular, women who have cardiovascular disease, living in rural communities, may face complications of minimal resources, including lack of available gyms or supermarkets in the area. Studies have results showing a 60% relapse within the first 6 months. As well, participants are unaware of the few resources made available to them such as farmer’s markets, or walking trails. Another challenge is the transportation access which is limited in rural communities. Therefore, these individuals may not have easy access to health care, recreational centres, and supermarkets (Khare, Koch, Zimmermann, Moehring & Geller, 2014, pg.365). Despite this, participants in this study still improved on their dietary and physical activity lifestyles according to the HSFW program. However, the participants were able to improve their cholesterol levels within the first 6 months but were not able to sustain them after the first year. Furthermore, these women were able to consume 3 servings of vegetables a day, increasing by 13.6%, and 2 fruit servings, increasing by 19.1%, from baseline to post intervention (pg. 366). As well, the study shows participants were able to develop their own personal action plan to fit their needs and enjoyments without the equipment.
