Libraries play an important role in getting information into the hands of the population. Today, librarians must use the basic concepts and principles related to the selection, evaluation, organization, and preservation of physical and digital information items. These information items have grown to include not only books, but many kinds of printed material, and vast electronic resources. Librarians must understand all aspects of the management of these collections, including their selection, evaluation, organization, and preservation. In doing this, libraries help to maintain the learning of generations and ensure that information is protected, preserved, and accessible.
The selection of material is the first step. The process of selecting material is based on the needs, wants and demands of the users, and limited by the financial, space, and staff resources of the institution. The patron base of each library or information agency determines the needs of the library. If a library were to chose material that did not suit its patron base, it would not be fulfilling its function as an information agency. Different libraries may have very different collections. For this assignment, I chose two current trends in young adult literature and explored titles which showcased those trends. The two trends I chose were ethnic diversity, and strong female role models. Both of these trends have become more influential in this genre in recent years. There were many books to choose from, and I found multiple titles that exemplified these themes. I evaluated those titles for how well they displayed the chosen themes and fit into the genre of young adult literature. By examining these current trends, and the books that showcased them, I gained valuable understanding useful in the selection process that librarians must be competent in
