The post-9/11 period additionally reactivated the worry among the Christians. The rising numbers of Muslims presence in public institutions and the mushrooming of mosques everywhere throughout the country were frequently presented as proofs for the case that Ethiopian Muslims were aspiring for political power taking into account radical religious thoughts. People in public debates turned out to be more polemical and antagonistic. It was even asserted that Islamic schools were "brain programming sessions and jihad processing plants producing potential bin Ladens," and that "innocent Ethiopian children are taken to different countries in the Middle East for military training, and after that return home to take part in the fastidiously coordinated…
Overall, colonialism in Kenya was negative. There was an unfair education system and forced government laws along with treatment. However, there were some positive aspects, like the choice to keep the native religion or convert. The colonization of Kenya happened in the context of the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution started in the 1700’s.…
In the memoir, “A Long Way Gone” by Ishameal Beah, the author reveals his struggle to find hope through vivid natural imagery as he tries to survive alone in the broken villages of Sierra Leone. As Beah walks through the villages alone, he comes across a decision that he has to face: “Along the spring there were several trees with ripe fruit that I had never seen. I decided to try some of it, since it was the only edible thing around. It was either take the chance and eat this fruit that might poison me or die of hunger”(50-51). At this point in the memoir, Beah needs food in order to keep up physically and mentally to survive.…
Before the legitimate colonization of Kenya took place, many different peoples settled in the area. Cushitic-speaking people from northern Africa settled in a region of East Africa, which is the region that is now considered Kenya, around 2000 BC. Due to Kenya’s proximity to the Arabian Peninsula, by the first century AD, Arabian traders frequented the Kenyan coast, eventually establishing Arab and Persian colonies. In addition to the Arabs and Persians, during the first century AD, the Bantu and Nilotic people also moved into this specific East African region, settling inland. It was because of these peoples settling down here that the Swahili language was formed, as it evolved from a mixture of the Arabic and Bantu languages.…
Conflicts between nations have existed since the beginning of time. They are the reason nations don’t have stability and may cause people to fight for their lives. Sudan was one of those nations that brought conflict to both north and south Sudan. South Sudan’s people had to go through a lot of conflicts to be where they are at today, to become independent. Most of the south Sudanese lost their homes and family.…

The booming voice called out for my little family of four to board our plane, a plane that would take us to the depths of a mysterious alien world. Or at least that’s what little six-year-old me thought when I left my home country of Cuba to come to the United States. That was a time of emotional turmoil for me, feeling the pain of leaving everything and everyone I knew behind. There was the excitement and fear of coming to a new unknown place, but there was also a feeling of dread at this vast language barrier that I was facing, and finally accepting and adapting to this new life. Coming from Cuba was a difficult experience that helped me grow and learn.…
As a biracial girl, growing up in America, my only experience with my Ugandan heritage has been through my family members telling me their stories about growing up in Uganda, and my grandmother recounting her experiences of fighting for Uganda’s Independence in 1962. This year, my grandmother passed away. In the Ugandan culture, the family returns back to the resting place of the loved one, a year after their passing, to have a celebration of their life and a bestowal of the new heir of the family. The heir that is chosen takes on the responsibility of nurturing and supporting the family, while guiding the way for future generations. With the funds from the Alex Cohn grant, I would able to travel to Uganda for the first time and get to learn…
I grew up in Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo. I really don’t remember much about it, I just remember when we had to move a lot because of war. Every time but my family found a place where we stayed until I was seven. We stayed in Tanzania in a town called Nyarugusu. Everybody used to fear that place,…
While the cultural narrative divides refugees from nativists and finds reasons to bar refugees from entry to countries, Mohsin Hamid not only reveals the refugee perspective, but also questions the idea of nativism itself as a legitimate reason for division. While Exit West follows the story of Nadia and Saeed, it also includes the many other refugees that the couple run into, and the doors present opportunities not only for refugees fleeing war and persecution, but also for everyday people that are looking for a new place to go. In the main plotline, the couple meet and live with other refugees, but the subplots in each chapter – which break from any known characters and jump into a new story entirely – include the magical realism of the doors,…
I come from two worlds that intertwine; My family originated from the nomadic lands of Eastern Africa and reside in tranquil Southern California. I live Somali/Moroccan culture although I don't live in either of those countries. My culture and society has shaped not only my dreams, but my life's path. There's currently a war going on in my country, so my family immigrated to America in search of a better life, for future generations. I choose to embrace that I am Somali regardless of its current state, because I have a vision of what it was like before the Civil war.…
The language (sound and body) is also associated with the films binarism that seeks to demonize the Somalians. First of all, you can tell that most of the American soldiers have years of training and experience making them effective fighters, but the Somali militia forces are shown as a barley functionable fighting force. In many of the fight scenes, the militia not only can’t aim, but they are super disorganized in how they fight. They rarely even utilize guerrilla tactics when fighting and just in general seem careless only hitting targets through sheer luck. On top of this, their killings are made to look far more ruthless than that of the American soldiers.…
In addition to the direct failures of the intervention, we can learn a great deal about the American failure through the consequences of Somalia. Domestic politics drives foreign policy, and in the case of Somalia, the domestic backlash sheds light on what was a step in the wrong direction for security as seen through Presidential Decision Directive 25. After the tragedy of the battle of Mogadishu and Black Hawk Down, President Clinton was facing mounting domestic pressure to ‘bring the boys home’. Congress was calling for a withdrawal of American troops, and the public were demanding an explanation for the lives lost in a battle many believed was outside the scope of U.S. interests. Another effect of globalisation was the increased media…
The Plane Ride When I was nine my family started a move from the tranquil suburbs of San Jose, California to the desert city of Windhoek, Namibia, located in southern Africa. My parents were taking myself, along with my younger sister and brother, around the globe because they felt a calling from God to be missionaries. All of our possessions were sold off, including my much beloved toys, until everything we had could fit into eight large suitcases. These suitcases are what we carried to the airport as we prepared for our journey. I felt no small amount of apprehension and excitement in what lay ahead of me in the new country, but an event I would experience in the coming flight would forever change and shape my perspective of how I see the…
