Students are constantly asked, “what did you learn today” and most do not know how to answer that question. Did you really learn anything if you only remember half of the material that was taught? Every child learns better in different ways. Is it fair to expect them all to retain information expressed verbally by teachers? Each student should be recognized as an individual mind. Many things affect the amount of knowledge a student retains including the location they study, how they are studying, and what type of learning style suits them best. Did you know that your favorite nook of your house is not always the best place to study everyday? Distractions are always a main reason why while we are “studying”, we are actually focused on …show more content…
You know yourself better than anyone else, but you should keep an open mind to different ways to study and see if they work for you. Do not waste your time and effort if you could try a new and more sustainable method. Most students argue that repeating the same problem over and over helps them remember how to get the answer. The truth is after the first time you complete the equation, you already know the final result. So the next times you work through the problem you skip some of the important middle steps. If you study the same type of problem but have different inputs, it is proven to be more effective when you need to recall the steps for a test equation. (CITE?) Repetition is usually used by students who cram before a test. If you give yourself enough time to use more effective study methods, your scores and retained knowledge will all be worth it. The researchers in the article To Really Learn, Quit Studying and Take a Test, by Pam Belluck, stated that the students who just read the material for five minutes retained the most information. Teachers have always told us that is not the best way to learn. They have taught us to break the readings down and make personal ties to the text. Have we been wasting our time instead of actually learning the given materials? The statistics show that we could have been retaining just from rereading

Throughout the course of just six days the average person would recall just 23 percent of what they have learned. Concluding that if a teacher were to give a 20 minute lecture on the civil war, and then he was to give a test on it, most students would score no higher than a mere 65 percent, even though the information was given to them recently. So then if students cannot even recall a quarter of learnt material within six days, then what would happen if the material had not been refreshed or reviewed within 60 days.…

Often students compartmentalize material and never look beyond the top layer of the material to see the why behind it. This leads to them picking up a basic understanding of material and never really appreciating it and applying it elsewhere. This reduces the feeling of relevance in the students and so they turn to cramming and short-term memorization rather than impactful learning. My goal was to change that and help students gain an appreciation for what they were reading about and hearing about in lecture. I pushed my students toward learning the usefulness behind the subject material rather than looking at it as just busy work.…

The quick bits of information that they are looking up are most likely little concepts or small parts of a main idea that they are learning. That little bit of information will be forgotten soon, but the students understanding of the overarching topic will greatly increase as a result. This is shown most clearly shown through students using calculators. Since they were,” No longer forced to spend a lot of time on routine calculations, many students gain a deeper understanding of the principals underlying their exercises”(Carr 192). Since they were using this information to supplement their learning instead of in place of it, they were able to gain much more out of it, and the same is true with the…

The concept of education is how to learn, understand material, and knowledge that is taken in. Through education certain values and beliefs are developed. These beliefs, habits, and skills shape a student’s character. There are two controlling factors that come into play when discussing the concept of education; one is the teacher and the other is the student. As illustrated in Richard Feynman’s article, “O Americano Outra Vez,” a student’s learning focus is overwhelmingly influenced by the teaching style they are subject too.…

By the end of each week, I was tested on spelling and pronunciation of the sight words, which required memorization. On the test, words were presented as nouns and adjectives.…
