One way that nearly every public elementary school encourages learning is through creative and collaborative group work. I believe this imaginative and collective way of teaching encourages learning because students get to take concepts and learn them by using hands on methods and they get to creatively and critically think about the project at hand. By using group work, teachers are also encouraging students to learn from one another and learn not just academically but socially. One way that schools might be discouraging learning is through required readings. I have never really enjoyed reading because it has always been required in schools, which made me view reading as a task instead of something that I could leisurely enjoy. I …show more content…
However, making kids read the same thing and something they may not have interest in can open their minds and change their perspectives, which is an important part of school. Weissglass reminded me kids all have different definitions, assumptions and perspectives and when we make kids read required books we create a discussion about our differences and learn something new or learn to respect a belief that is different than our own. I now think a way schools might be discouraging learning is through how they give feedback. I have witnessed my CT tell students to color in the lines better or write more and I am not judging how she gives feedback, I have just observed my students walk away from her with their shoulders slumped and go back to their desks and erase all of their work. Bingham, Holbrook and Meyers said, “The feedback children receive from parents and teachers affects their self-perceptions as learners, their motivation to succeed in school, and their desire to achieve complex tasks.” (p. 82). I think schools could implement ways to teach their teachers how to give effective feedback, especially with standardized testing because doing poorly on that can shut down kids. I want to implement effective feedback in my …show more content…
Weissberg and Cascarino said, “SEL involved acquiring and effectively applying the knowledge, attitude, and skills to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.” (p. 189). Therefore, if I am making the consistent effort to apply SEL in our classroom then these students will have the resources to handle this problem.
Conclusion
Teaching requires a lot out of a person, adaptability, patience, encouragement, and a lot of hard work and diligence. However, learning requires as much adaptability, patience, encouragement, hard work and diligence. The teacher and the student are in the same boat and are both overcoming tough situations to become resilient and determined in their areas of effort. Therefore, there should not be conflict between the teacher and the student because while their goals and intentions may differ, their efforts require the same
