The Importance Of Learning How To Read

Improved Essays
As an only child and going to a private Christian school, people may think learning how to read may have been easy because of the attention I received. Learning how to write wasn't nowhere near easy for me. I remember having “The Cat in the Hat” read to me on a regular basis and soon I could read, at least what I thought was reading. Then, one day I tried to read another Dr. Seuss book, “Green Eggs and Ham” and I failed miserably because what I considered reading was only memorizing words. I really didn't read much as a kid because I was somewhat hesitate of learning something new. Not only was new experiences hard for me, learning how to read was tougher because I was learning it two different ways. My teacher actually broke down words by their syllables and made sure I was comfortable reading certain words before moving on. My …show more content…
He told me, “In order to become a better writer, you have to become a better reader.” Not only that, he also said “When reading and writing, make it interesting and fun.” This was something I had to consider since I wasn't one to just pick up and read a book for fun. I really didn't understand what he was trying to say until I decided to take college courses at Vance Granville. I started attending Vance Granville in the fall of 2011, so I can stay close to home and help out my family. I signed up for my classes and my least favorite one, English, was one of the first ones I had to take. Reading and writing wasn't one of my strongest assets, but I was excited about the semester that was going to be filled with new learning experiences. In high school, all I remember writing was simple essays, with three paragraphs and didn't have to go into great detail about the topic. English in college was completely different since most essays had that have five paragraphs or had to be in MLA

Some children don’t learn how to read or write until they start grade school. These are usually the children that have trouble reading throughout school and have to attend special classes to help with their reading. In Richard Rodriguez’s essay “The Lonely, Good Company of Books” he talks about how from an early age he knew that his mother and father could read and write, but never for pleasure. He watched his father make his way through what he thought was his tax forms and how his mother would read onion-paper letters air-mailed from Mexico. In Russel Bakers essay “Learning to Write” he talks about his English class being dreary and that his teacher would read Macbeth to the class which none of the boys liked to hear and made fun of him for.…

Being able to read is necessary in order to achieve things in life including: being able to graduate from school and being able to hold down a job. Aiken and Groth-Marnat (2006) state that “many problems experienced by children in learning school subjects are associated with reading” (p. 214). Therefore, reading tests are important in helping to diagnose problems concerning reading abilities so that those having trouble with reading can get the proper help they need. There are three major categories that reading tests fall under: survey tests, diagnostic tests, and reading-readiness tests (Aiken & Groth-Marnat, 2006, p. 215).…

All my life, I never truly appreciated reading, writing of what is was, for I’ve always hated reading and writing. I could never see as of why it’s so important to read or write by virtue of me believing either it’s boring or a huge waste of time. My parents and teachers would always encourage me, but I could never really get into it. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always been a good reader and writer; I just didn’t like to do it. For an example, back in second grade I was reading at a fifth grade level.…

When I was first growing up reading was my toughest obstacle. I remember one of the most embarrassing bits of news I had ever received was that I was two years behind my reading level. I was in third grade and was told that I was currently on a first grader's level of reading. One of the ways I overcame this challenge was by standing in the pantry and reading every cereal box, soup can, and wrapper I could find. Imagine holding a soup can in your small hand and trying to understand your mom telling you that it is 'Cambell's soup' not 'Camp Bell's soup'.…

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.” This is one of my favorite quotes by George R.R. Martin, and in a way he is right, people who read a lot tend to picture themselves in the stories they read. With the many books that I own, I’m glad to say that I lived many lives. Of all the books that I own, the Darkest Powers Trilogy is held dear to my heart, because it was the series that got me to love reading for fun.…

Typically girls outperform boys on standardized test, the amount of reading done relates directly to reading achievement, and the kind of reading in school can cause boys to read less are three issues that need to be addressed. Knowing this, a study was conducted in an elementary school with thirty-five boys from four fifth grade classes in a north central North Carolina to find out what boys really want. Each of the students completed an open-ended interview about reading with questions that asked things such as the type of reader students are, if they like reading for pleasure, if reading will be important as a grownup, whether the men in their family read, what types of reading tasks at school are worthwhile, advice you have for your teacher…

My brother had trouble speaking when he was little so it made it more challenging for all of us because we were also teaching him how to speak properly.
