It makes sense that a church should have leadership. People need structure. Schools have leaders, businesses have leaders, and nations have leaders. Every organized gathering of people has leaders. Choosing who you leaders are is very important because that will affect your organization. The agency and responsibilities of your leaders will affect how they interact with your organization. What about choosing leaders to lead the church? Are the rules any different when selecting church leaders than they are for other organizations? What are the leaders in the church supposed to do? All church elders are Christians. All church elders are a member of a local church. A church elder is an exemplary Christian. A one-woman man, filled with compassion for God’s people. He should be gentle, humble, always in Church. He should be a man who knows, and loves, and has the ability to teach the word of God at any time. An Elder has a good public name. He is known publicly for his mercy and grace. He is known for good work, financial responsibility, and a leader of his household. A church should recognize men as elders who are already doing this. A church should select worthy men to lead, pray, and teach who are already doing just that. Give these men the position and agency they need to perform the duty that they are already on. Recognize them publically and bestow them with authority to lead. Formal theological training is not a prerequisite of eldership. Men who would be elders must love and study the Word of God regularly. They should be disciple by their fellow elders.
