Teacher turnover is something that happens regardless of wonderful, positive school culture, due to endless life events. School leaders work tirelessly over the summer to search for effective teachers who have potential to be a good fit for the individual school environment. Hiring a high quality teacher is not an easy task and must be planned for very carefully. A principal may want to implement a solid mentoring program for new teachers. “Today 's principal directly influences educator retention through the development and maintenance of effective mentoring programs” (Lynch, 2012, p. 41). “A principal that creates a supportive special education environment may increase the academic performance and proficiency of students with disabilities. This inadequate preparation has proven even more consequential in rural special education settings that present unique challenges, such as high special education teacher attrition rates and increased proportions of students with disabilities (Lynch, 2012, p. 40-41). The school’s administration can lean on the special education teachers for guidance in what needs attention in this matter, but will need leadership to take control.
