Leadership is a rare trait that is not only sought, but often deified. This is for good reason, as leadership is a prestigious trait that comes with many positive connotations such as wealth, power, respect, and success. As such, leadership has become something that is perceived as having value in and of itself, but as is explained in Simon Sinek’s Start with Why, this ought not be the case as leadership is something so powerful and so important that it is all but morally obligatory that it be done properly. Regardless of whether true leaders are born or made, in Start with Why Sinek sets out to discuss just what being a good leader consists of, how one might best lead, and how to execute leadership skills. But before a potential leader can establish any of these things, they must first establish the most important leadership question which the book is titled for – why? Sinek opens Start with Why by phrasing this question in a broad manner, but through the course of the book narrows that question through a few statements of contextual questions and more specific “why” questions. The contextualization work is done first, and spans the majority of the book. Through this context, Sinek explains why the question “why” should be at the core of any leader’s agenda and philosophy. By using strong literary devices, rhetoric, allusion, and comparison, Sinek is able to drive home the most important points of the book by tying it to the real world. This is good for readers from many backgrounds, as these examples tend to be commonly known but complex in nature, creating appeal for both those with a background in business or leadership while remaining understandable to a larger audience.
