I would try to find money in the budget to introduce new technology that would foster student achievement and help improve the culture of the building. I would ask staff members to share their knowledge of technology and how they are using it within the classroom to promote leaders and show that I value my teachers’ opinions. According to “Why Integrate Technology into the Curriculum?: The Reasons are Many” from Edutopia it states, “When technology is effectively integrated into subject areas, teachers grow into roles of adviser, content expert, and coach.” By asking teachers to first help administer the professional development and then by promoting the use of technology within the classroom, teachers would feel a sense of ownership and pride which will bring a more positive outlook to the building. I would try to be in and out of teacher’s classrooms and the hallways as often as possible so that staff members would see that I am invested in what they are teaching and how students are responding to instruction. This would also hopefully alleviate some worries around evaluations because it would be commonplace to see me in the room. In “A Profile in Leadership: Dewey Hensley,” Hensley mentions he “did a lot of first-hand observation in classrooms, leaving behind detailed notes for teachers…things to think about and next steps for improvement.” This man was able to take a failing school and turn it around and one way was through his diligence in being present each day and not hiding away in an office.
