Captain On The Hockey Team: A Leadership Analysis

From my experiences as Captain on the hockey team, and through the various work I have done over the years. I have learned much about what it takes to be a true leader. There are many attributes that I have worked on acquiring over the years. My developing and learning of these characteristics have brought my leadership ability to where it is today. I use these attributes to not only develop my teammates as players and students, but also as citizens so that they may hopefully continue to be successful later in life partially through my influence. As I continue to go further in life, I hope that I may increase these attributes even more, thusly, becoming a better leader for the future. The first attribute that I would like to speak about is my ability to discipline those you work with. It is not easy to be a universally liked as a leader. Unfortunately, there have been times where I have to take part in the punishment of many that may be considered friends. Being a leader does not put an individual above his or her teammates in any moral, mental, or physical way. It merely sets that person as a guide to keeping their teammates on track. Many leaders can become arrogant due to their position and try to use it as a sort of bragging right or leverage against their teammates. This will only cause issues that hurts the team overall. For these reasons, I make sure to let my teammates know that I do not feel superior to them in any way. I am not the fastest on my team and I do not have the best shot, I am simply a hard worker that follows directions while trying to encourage my teammates to do the same, regardless of skill.
