Former President John F. Kennedy once said, “leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” As a young business student who is still in the process of learning what it means to be an effective leader and making a positive impact in the world, I need to learn and get advice from as much people as possible. Specifically, I must gain knowledge from those who have the experience and are experts in the fields of business and leadership. After listening to Ms. Dara Ashlock, I noticed three important things that I need to incorporate into my leadership style; team, professional appearance, and personal branding.
Ms. Ashlock mentioned how important the way we interact with people is and to treat everyone like they are on my team. Her story really touched me, she told us about how she started working at the advertising company and developed a good relationship with the UPS guy and even had his phone number saved in her phone. Ashlock talked about was developing a personal brand. I learned that building a personal brand is about how I package myself, how I brand myself, and what it is that I bring to the table. My personal brand is about my skills, and what makes me who I am. An example that she gave, that caught my attention, was when she said that she has had many business cards with different job titles and logos, but the only thing that has remained consistent is her name. In other words, her personal brand, skills, and what people say and think of her have all remained the same. She has worked hard to develop her personal brand and gain the respect of others. As a young business student who is still learning how to be a leader, I need to learn that my decisions and the way I present myself to others, in and out of work, will affect my personal brand. I need to work hard and demonstrate that I am capable and competent so that when my name is mentioned, people automatically think of leadership and
