Pg-13 Offensive Language

When negative events such as wars, violence against certain groups, personal loss of one kind or another, or other traumatic events happen, we are left without words. Perhaps we are unable to explain the pain we have felt and the shock that has ensued, leaving us grasping for words. Our minds cannot form sentences as we try to understand the events surrounding us. But perhaps a closer look would show that our language skills have declined, no longer having a vocabulary large enough to allow us to describe the feelings we have. As such, we may resort to swearing to adequately gain the reaction that we desire, using words that fall more bluntly on the ears depending on the severity of the situation. This has been evident as I’ve heard even church leadership resort to harsher swear words in lieu of a bad situation.
Language has evolved, but not for the better. In my

R rated movies are much more likely to be more offensive. Looking at movies from this year, a majority is PG-13. Many have a short but mediocre script, relying on foul language to carry it. Even our dearly beloved Disney has catered to the foul mouth of today’s society as Captain America, referenced often as “America’s Dream”, says “son of a bitch” and “You’re damn right.”
As we feel as if “damn” and “hell” are acceptable to use in media, writers and directors push their boundaries, using more explicit language. We become accustomed to one set of language that is being used in television and worse language used in society. We feel validated by the media using harsher language, continuing the chain, creating cruder and harsher language than previously. As time passes our language changes and swearing becomes more acceptable in society. But not only do the currently commonplace swear words become more acceptable, they become cliché and harsher, more vulgar language becomes the

Recently, political correctness has swept into the forefront of modern day culture. The term has come to mean a variety of things, but at its core is an idea that words and actions should not offend or make anyone uncomfortable. However, South Park has managed to remain strong to its roots by still being inflammatory and offensive with the series continuing to draw heaps of criticism from many different groups. While South Park may not conform to what polite society expects, it manages to provide biting satire and commentary. Marcus Schulzke argues in “South Park and the Transformation of Meaning” that a hateful word’s meaning can be changed over time which can be seen in “The F-Word” in which the boys call a group of loud bikers “fags” as they try to get them to leave town (2012).…

Thumb’s Down Strong offensive language is widely used by everyone whether it’s when texting, or speaking to someone and it conveys a strong and emotional message. In addition, there has been a small number of authors who have used it in a story such as Cristina Henriquez when she wrote “Micho Alvarez”. In her short story Cristina used profanity to channel her emotions towards the mistreatment of Mexicans and what they go through.…

The editorial “Pimping Teenage Girls” by The Washington Times is an editorial used to show the audience that females are often hypersexualized in the media. The author used lots of connotation and bias to prove their point and show others that sexual exploitation of females on TV needs to stop. Rhetoric was used lightly in this editorial, the author not overly using it. A common form of rhetoric that was found was pathos, and this was one form that the author used a lot. For example in paragraph 9 the sentence states that “viewers themselves must let the networks know that the exploitation of children is unacceptable by turning off the trash, dialing a decent channel when they can find one, and reading a newspaper, magazine or book during prime time when ratings are made” (The Washington Times 9).…

I believe in this, especially in the south, where people seem to be more outspoken. If you ask someone you know very well for their opinion, not merely will they use at least one curse word, they will also be kind of blunt. People who are blunt are usually truthful – even if it hurts your feelings or makes you furious. Even Dr. David Stillwell admits, “Swearing is often inappropriate but it can also be evidence that someone is telling you their honest opinion. Just as they aren't filtering their language to be more palatable, they're also not filtering their views”(Study finds link between swearing and honesty, Phys.org).…

Throughout time, there have been many words that have offended people of many races and religions. Even in this time period, there continue to be such words. However, there are words that are not meant to be offensive since they carry a different meaning behind them. Such words either sound similar to offensive words or they were “evolved” into offensive words. One word that I would discuss about is “Bitch,” its past, present, and how it affects people.…

Running on Empty Book club #1 The first chapter of the story “Running on Empty” by Don Aker was truly intriguing. Speaking as a teenage boy myself, these characters displays similar traits like immaturity displayed in extreme driving and bad language. As society moves progressively through the years, and with curse words becoming a regular part of our everyday language, curse words have lost almost complete shock value, and as a result, has stopped being viewed as offensive. You stub your toe, you cry out “Fuck” in pain. You get frustrated, you might give up and sigh, “Fuck it!” You’re friends are joking and making fun of you, you can retort in a jesting manner, “Fuck you.” The same word was used in all of these phrases in three different ways, but is never used at someone’s expense.…

Foul language can leave an abiding and pessimistic affect on the population. Sharing a story, expressing an opinion, or general communication can be equally effective without abusive language. Author Stephen L. Wessler emphasizes, "Unfortunately, the routine use of slurs and other degrading language has desensitized too many students... The impact of debasing language on these students is powerful and destructive" (Wessler 29). Hearing this routinely in…

The movement of the use of a clean vocabulary on college campuses is at an all-time high with students becoming distressed and offended at certain words and even some students experiencing micro aggressions from others, this is an arising issue because these students are the future and many more obstacles will emerge in the real world. “Even joking about macroaggressions can be seen as an aggression, warranting punishment “(Lukianoff, Haidt). In the article, “The Coddling of the American Mind”, by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt, use statistics and examples to evoke concern about the rise in mental health in college students due to trigger warnings and the actions of micro aggressions.…

Profanity roams the world at different degrees in different places and situations. Under college policy, professors are allowed to use profane words; however, there should be limitations as to how far it should be used. Professors using profanity should be limited to use it in aiding to provide clarity to ideas, to help keep the class engaging, while simultaneously prioritizing their students’ comfortability and learning experience. Professors should be allowed to use profanity in their classes strictly as a teaching instrument.…

For instance, when Chris Kyle misses his shot during target practice he states, “Oh fuck”. Steven Pinker did research in profanity use and found that swear words, such as ‘fuck’, appear frequently in certain contexts and can play a different range of functions (Wang). One of these functions that can apply to any other profanity word is using profanity can be a person’s way of keeping their emotions deep down inside because otherwise without profanity they could show a form of weakness. For instance, during his first tour while riding in the HMMVW (Humvee) his commander in chief states, “Let’s be safe and get our asses back home”. His commander in chief uses profanity to keep the seals from getting emotional about going back home to their…

Children learn words good and bad at a very constant yet rapid pace. Parents probably did not know that children know a large number of swear words by the time they are five years old. This is mind blowing to think about because people do not think about children knowing these words.
