As a Korean, I am well-aware of the culture of Korean society. There is coined term that many people refer to as the “Korean Mentality”. The Korean mentality specifically refers to the old-school approach that nothing is impossible, dedication and hard work will prevail, all things will go as planned, and if you apply this correctly you will be successful. Samsung has a strong and conservative culture due to its success off this Korean mentality. While they are many important values that lie in this Korean mentality, the truth is that this way of thinking implemented by family and society, puts off a large portion of the younger generation. In fact, their workers are known as “Samsung Man,” not being specific to any gender. In Korea, “Samsung Man” refers to the most talented elite people. They are perceived to be the highest-paid employees who enjoy the best welfare benefits in Korean Society. Just as someone in the US would perceive an individual who works for Google or Apple. One prominent reason as to why Samsung is so innovative is because they are heavily invested into their employees. Their innovative ability comes from their methodology of producing an elite group of workers that are enforced and supported by a rigid system of training and management. Samsung is willing to search for the talented and Creative Elite. Mentioned previously about the Korean Mentality, the term Samsung Man also represents the can-do spirit of older generations who used to prioritize work over their personal life and never hesitate to sacrifice whenever the company requires. To be considered a Samsung Man and be a part of what Samsung refers to as the “Creative Elite” certain values and requirements must be met. These include ability to speak or understand English to a certain level, have a mindset to serve, must be teachable, have a high engineering sense, and have a leadership skillset. They want to be able to have great working employees who also can balance their work life and personal life. The company always has had a big emphasis on cultural values when it comes to their employees and their personal lives. Therefore, the company would like to reduce any unnecessary meetings as much as possible and work hours. With that happening, they would like to simplify some procedures and improve productivity of the company.
