Knowledge is developed through living a free life and being able to make one’s own decisions. Humans do in fact learn from their mistakes and it’s important that people are given the opportunity to do so. The characters in the novel had no room to make mistakes, but they also didn’t have room to learn and grow. The book tells the reader that if society allows government to keep them ignorant then they can’t figure out what’s out there in the world and can’t seek true knowledge.

This passage contains things about both knowledge and ignorance. Montag is stating the fact that knowledge is equivalent if not greater then power, because with knowledge comes power. But on the other hand, Captain Beatty is stating that power is what’s important. Although Beatty thinks power is what’s important, he is also ignorant and oblivious to true power of knowledge. Maybe he doesn’t want to accept the fact that knowledge is beneficial or maybe he perceives it in a negative way. Either way he is saying why would someone give power, which is a certain thing, for knowledge, which he believe is an uncertain
