Captain Beatty stated this quote upon Mantag’s return to the fire station from being ‘sick’. In this quote we can see Captain Beatty true feelings and thoughts towards books/knowledge. It is easy to see Captain Beatty’s ignorance towards true knowledge. As we know Captain Beatty has read books before and actually knows quite a bit about them. Although he has a lot of knowledge about the books he is ignorant to the fact that the books contain knowledge that is very useful. This passage contains things about both knowledge and ignorance. Montag is stating the fact that knowledge is equivalent if not greater then power, because with knowledge comes power. But on the other hand, Captain Beatty is stating that power is what’s important. Although Beatty thinks power is what’s important, he is also ignorant and oblivious to true power of knowledge. Maybe he doesn’t want to accept the fact that knowledge is beneficial or maybe he perceives it in a negative way. Either way he is saying why would someone give power, which is a certain thing, for knowledge, which he believe is an uncertain
