When both families agree, they usually hold a formal ceremony where the groom’s family must give gifts to every family member of the bride’s. Then the bride’s family holds a banquet where the gifts are received and contracts would be signed with the seal of each family (Xin, 2014). On the day before the wedding, the groom sends the bride a suit of clothing and a hair ornament wrapped in silk to wear on her wedding day. Both are not allowed to see each other the day before, and throughout the day, monks pray for their wedding to be without bad luck (Xin, 2014). On the wedding day, a man on the groom’s side will be accompanied by a group of people, a horse, and arrows decorated in mirrors, jade, and jewels. The bride’s family will hold a ritual for the bride as a farewell before the groom’s family arrives known as Qiema. When the greeting bride party arrives, the bride must an arrow on her back and a jade on her forehead to show that she is part of the groom’s family (Xin, 2014). The whole party sings on their way to the groom’s house while the bride weeps from being separated from her family. Upon arrival, the bride must trample over on barleys and tea leaves as a symbol of bringing harvest to the groom’s family (Xin, 2014). The bride and groom would sit in the living room to accept gifts and blessings. This is where the bride officially becomes part of the groom’s family and lives with them.
