Kid-Watching Assignment Kindergarten plays a significant role in the development of a child as in these early years of their life, children are learning the basic structures of human life. Children come into the kindergarten classrooms with different levels of skills learned from their parents at home. Upon starting school, especially in literacy, students are exposed to the English language in a safe environment at school. Throughout the school year, students continue to use and develop language to communicate thought and feelings to their family members and peers inside and outside the classroom. During this task, students would be reading pictures books out loud to themselves. Upon observation, a skill that the children were using was that they were connecting the visuals in the book to their understanding of book. This shows that children are only beginning to learn the importance of print in literature. Students would also use their fingers to point to words, along with attempting to sound out the words. As well, students would use syllables to divide words into fragments to better understand the pronunciation of a word, developing literacy skills through read-aloud. Furthermore, the students were able to dictate the beginning, middle and end of the story. However, kindergarteners experienced many miscues during their reading time because of their new exposure to books. The teacher noted that these miscues will decrease as the year progresses. However, the classroom teacher emphasized that these observations are not a representation of the children 's literacy skills as they will improve as the school year continues. As a result, the teacher recommended that these observations continue throughout the year to note the progress that has occurred in the classroom as the school year progresses. Additionally, many examples of student behaviour were not observed as some of the activities did not involve those behaviours. There was no guided reading activity during the time of the observation, so how students understood story details and interactions to literacy were not
