For example, about four years ago, I unexpectedly made the decision to join the Ecology Club in my high school. Life had just begun as a ninth-grader, and I was determined to join as many clubs and organizations as humanly possible. This dream, however, almost did not suffice because of my limited time and love for service. At first, the Ecology Club was alarming due to the requirement of twenty-five environmental service hours a semester and attendance to each activity. However, I quickly found a club that I could call a “safe haven” due to the inexplicable friendliness and good will shown to me by both new and old members. Before long,

Slowly, I took on more responsibility positions both in and out of Scouting, imparting my own amazing experience in Philmont onto the younger scouts and leading my fellow students as co-founder of Sustainability Club. Following my contributions in the Pancake Breakfast, I took a year-long hiatus from Scouting to focus on my studies, taking multiple AP classes to help supplement my interests. After the impromptu break, when I rejoined and revisited the enjoyment I experienced from my Philmont trek, I affirmed myself as a Scout for life, as I saw the positive influence the program had on me and knew that Scouting could guide me to become a better citizen of the community. Largely responsible for introducing me to my leadership abilities and individual morals, Scouting has shaped my character through my experiences with…

Upon entering Spelman college, I knew I wanted to be involved with a mentoring group, and while there was a multitude of groups to choose from, I decided on Lady Buds because their mission statement resonated with my goal before entering Spelman College.…

We spent a whole day at my school doing simple tasks such as garden cleaning, moving old furniture, covering graffiti, repainting old walls and stairwells. In the end, volunteering had a huge impact not only on me but also the community around me. It enabled me to connect with my community and make my school a better place. I realized that helping out with the simplest and smallest tasks can make a drastic difference in society. If we were to lose physical space, people would surrender their desire to obtain public good.…

KEY Club, a service and fundraising club, became my focus, and I travelled up the ranks to become the school’s external affairs manager and the service committee chair of the Eastern Canada District. As I introduced more extra-curricular activities into my life, organization became more important -- and I was shocked to see how much it helped me save…

Throughout high school, I have learned numerous lessons, ranging from the significance of honoring my heritage to the importance caring for others. Yet, these lessons are not ideas that can be simply taught, instead, through work and experience, I have come to discover how remarkable they truly are. One of the most pivotal catalysts in this age of personal growth and discovery was my experience with community service. Volunteering with the Lewiston Auburn Greek Festival exposed me to the unique energy and vitality that lives within culture and heritage.…

While attending the College of Coastal Georgia I have worked very hard to balance my time between class, school, work and extracurricular activities. My first year at the college I was a Freshman Senator in the student Government Association, a member of the Seaswell’s Literary Magazine, and a member of the Urban Gaming club. I’ve always tried to be involved in volunteer services in the community, so I continued to help out with the Satilla River Clean-up, which I had done throughout high school as well. I also volunteered for, and continue to each year, the Jekyll Island Beach clean-up and the Brantley County Relay for Life. I was a member of the Center of Academic Success, and through the program visited Sapelo Island’s Gullah festival and…

Still, my disillusionment with the idea of “normal” did nothing to remove the memories and experiences I had acquired. Now I strived for perfection but only for empty monotonous opportunities that taught me memorization and how to get an A. What I started to learn, however, was a contradiction in what I had learned at Goodwillie Environmental School. While they taught me how to handle responsibility and grow as an individual, they had handed me all of the amazing things I had ever experienced at their school. If I wanted to “reach for the highest rung of the ladder” I needed to do more than excel in what I was required to do.…

To change the world, an individual will need to start small with the people around them and the perceptions among them. With that, my question is; should high school require students to take an environmental ethics class to graduate? For most, high school is a time were the curriculum is being mastered through the student’s studies, the students in this new curriculum will be challenged to question their anthropocentric mindset. I believe yes, high school should have environmental ethics as a core holism class that each student must take. The criticisms that have been brought to my attention for this question are merit but astonishing.…
