Confucius once said, “Choose a job you love. And you will never have to work a day in your life”. So, imagine a world where everyone enjoys their job. Imagine college students that enjoy doing their work and without feeling like they’re doing pointless homework, but how are we expected to choose one career out of thousands when were not given the opportunity to explore all the possible career possibilities. College students are expected to make life changing decisions only a couple months after graduating high school. Therefore, college students are constantly changing their majors, and wasting their time and money trying to figure out the perfect career. College students only know about a career from what they’re taught in a class room and a textbook, and they might think they like it, but textbooks compared to hands on experience are completely different. College students might think they like the career, but when they actually see what the career is about and everything that is required from them in order to get the job done they might change perspective. For example, Isobel Stevens, was a surgeon who always had the desire of saving lives, but the countless hours of work, have little to no time to spend with her family, and being too emotionally attached to the patients made her realize that surgery wasn’t the career for her. If Isobel Stevens was given the opportunity to job shadow a surgeon, most likely she would’ve realized that surgery wasn’t the career for her way before graduating medical school. So, imagine her frustration, she had spent countless hours studying to become a surgeon. Now, she has to start over and find a new career that’s right for her. Some people could argue that Isobel should’ve toughen up and continue being a surgeon, but Isobel said, “I can’t keep doing a job that makes me feel miserable everyday” when she was saying goodbye to her
