Definition Of Intimacy

Improved Essays
The first time I heard a talk on intimacy with God, my thirteen-year-old self cringed on the inside.

Intimacy wasn 't a thing I expected to have with God. Intimacy was something for married couples, just for older people in general, with strictly other people, and God just wasn 't any part of it. That 's how it was.

At least, that 's what the culture told me it was about. Intimacy = sex. It was obvious. It was simple.

Except, it 's not.

The dictionary definition of intimate doesn 't even mention sex till six descriptions down. And numbers one through five? There 's a lot more to them.

associated in close personal relations characterized by warm friendship, a personally close or familiar association or feeling. very private; closely personal

Your friendship is a friendship that will last beyond the years. You have made plans for road trips and adventures with this person. You have committed to a long-term relationship with the exchanging of friendship bracelets. You share experiences and dreams with this person. They know all of your embarrassing secrets, and are the root of at least half of them. You better recognize this person in a crowd, because they will tackle you if you don 't find them first.

The Fifth Chair

Your Family: These people don 't necessarily have to be blood-relatives to be family. These are the people who love you wildly, who tell you 'no ' when you 're about to go on another Halloween-candy binge, who stand up for you through the good and the bad. They know your worst secrets and your deepest fears. They know what your weaknesses and strengths are. They are on your team, and they will always have your back. They are a constant in life. You don 't need to recognize these people in a crowd because they 're already with you.

God wants to be in that fifth chair; He wants to be part of your family. The God who made you is the God who wants you, and God made you with a purpose to seek after Him and be intimate with Him. God wants you to call him

He wants you to have people in those chairs, and have relationships. The God of love, who loves us, wants us to love others.

'Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. ' - 1 John 4:7-8

God is love.

Knowing God is knowing love. God intended us to have people in those chairs, to have friends and best friends and family. God made us with the need to be intimate with people, to have those deep relationships. To have intimacy. With other humans, and with Him. God wants something deep and lovely with you, but He 'll only share it if you want to. He won 't force himself into the fifth chair- Not if you don 't want Him there. He won 't push you.

So if He 's in chair one, alright. He 'll wait.

If He 's in chair two, sure. He won 't push you. Take your time. Get to know Him.

If He 's in chair three, He 's glad. He 'll take it. But He 'll still be knocking on the door you 've

Most mature adults can agree on the fact that sex is used to bring two individuals closer to each other. The two partners coming to a common goal of satisfying the respectful partner to ultimately form a bond that would not be present without sex. After sex, the relationship advances into a more serious stage where the couple feels obligated to one another. Where there should be a certain level of respect and loyalty granted to the sexual spouse in an ideal situation, and in that ideal situation, one of the individuals would give their respected partner gifts in representation of the love they may have for one another. It can be easily confusing for a person watching a relationship as such from a far because they view it as each man…

Give examples of how the practice of ministry has affected your experience and understanding of A) God At the core of my understanding of God is a God of love in covenantal relationship with God’s children. Romans 8:38-39 says it well; “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” The practice of ministry has only proven to strengthen that belief. I was called early Saturday morning to sit with a family who had just learned of the death of their daughter/granddaughter in a vehicle accident.…

Much of the world lives as a slave to exciting stimuli, which draws people into a cyclical pattern of falling into fleeting promises of happiness. Tish Harrison Warren explains this pattern and how to overcome this worldly trap in her book Liturgy of the Ordinary. Warren uses moments of difficulty in her own life to relate to the reader; for example, that she is able to find value through the mundane task of brushing her teeth or consuming leftover food. As a whole people, God created each individual person to experience life in an exciting context in order to better seek Him; along the same line, Warren agrees that we are made to be embodied - to experience life, pleasure, and limits in our bodies (Warren 39).…

I promptly responded, Suddenly I realized that all my pages and pages regarding the evils of Satan were virtually lacking of what ‘I really wanted to relate;’ by my words I realized my “true desire” transpired as being deliberately vague. This factual bombshell exploded within my being, along with the amazing issue of how unnerved I had become. Unlike the bold encounter I previously mentioned with my Aunt Lucy May regarding this subject, I found the experience of conversing with an unfamiliar man concerning my Godly sexual beliefs, distressed me as much as if Billy Graham was rummaging through my panty drawer needing answers about my “unmentionables.”…

Throughout the process of learning about my top four Sacred Pathways, I have learned a lot about myself individually such as, my pathways are caregiver, contemplative, enthusiast, and naturalist. I could have told myself these things; if anyone knows me then they already know that I am all these things every single day. There is no doubt in my mind that I am not already a caregiver and a naturalist and an enthusiast, however, I had never noticed how big of a contemplative I was until I read Sacred Pathways by Gary Thomas. Caring for others and showing compassion onto those around us comes with loving God. By being a caregiver, I have come to the realization of traits in me that I hadn't noticed before.…

In chapters, eight and nine Helen Fisher, describes the relationship between love, drug addiction, and how people deal with their emotions when being in love. After reading her work, I agree with several of her claims. To begin with, Fisher describes romantic love as an “urge, a want, a need—a primordial mating drive that can be, at times, more powerful than hunger. ”(pg 182) By stating this Fisher, if referring to a type of passionate love that is so strong, people have no control over it.…
