The Importance Of Intersex Bathrooms

Improved Essays
Despite what many believe transgenders are not asking to access the bathroom they identify with to sexual assault men or women, in fact more crime is committed against transgenders and gender nonconforming than cisgenders, with over seventy percent of reported in 2012 hate crime being against trans* people alone. In fact, intersex bathrooms would not only be beneficial to trans* and gender nonconforming, but to people with children, as caretakers of the opposite sex would be able to accompany children that may be old enough to attend the restroom alone, but still young enough to make guardians uncomfortable when out of their sight. And help protect people transiting, (as they would have to worry about not being able to pass as either male …show more content…
Additionally, trans*/gender nonconforming are at higher risk for suicide because of the sense of otherness they face from society. As far as the sexual harassment worries that everyone seems to vocalize, it’s not very likely there would be a significantly higher risk, and rather gender-neutral bathrooms could save lives by eliminating a key factor of society’s strict either/or gender restriction. Neutral bathroom may perhaps even lower crime rate because the bill would help prevent violence against trans* and gender nonconforming, therefore making it more difficult for perpetrators to identify trans*/gender nonconforming and single them out. Neutral bathrooms would also benefit people with children because it would give caretakers easier access when children are big enough to go to the opposite bathroom alone, but still too young to be out of vision, and those with disabilities. Frankly, the positive consequences outweigh any potential detrimental effects of gender-neutral bathroom. It’s time for America to fully embrace the gender-neutral bathroom, and let go of the erroneous belief that one sex is somehow more superior than another, as well as for a matter, the myth that there only two genders. After all, it took over a hundred years of women and African American, fighting to have the same rights as white cisgender males, (and in many aspects we still are), my point is, we now we can clearly, (and shamefully) see the racism and sexism of our ancestors. So do we, as a nation truly wish to make the same mistake again by refusing to give human rights to a minority? To almost thirty-five percent of our nation (Gates 3)? Do we dare to call them

The author argues that anyone who is not phased by breaking the law, wont stop them from entering a restroom that prohibits them from using either. If we had gender neutral bathrooms in our school, it would make genderqueer (transgender and non-binary) questioning students and feel much safer and better represented in their own school. To begin, many genderqueer students feel unsafe in single gender restrooms, and the psychological effects are damaging. Going into single gender bathrooms can cause anxiety, fear, and other stresses for genderqueer students.…

Maybe people should just avoid using public restrooms. Then there is the similar but different issue of locker rooms. Locker rooms are separated by gender to protect students, so how do we both protect transgendered students and cisgendered students? I wish I could say there was a simple solution, perhaps have four locker rooms rather than two. One for cis males, one for cis females, one for transgender males, one for transgender female.…

If a trans* male (ftm) were to go into the women’s restroom looking and passing as a cis male it could be very dangerous and/or chaotic. Women would most likely panic because you don’t always know when someone is trans* and they would think it’s just a man.…
