Historically speaking, men were superior to women, Caucasians were superior to African-Americans and the wealthy were superior to the working class. This history brings us back to binary thinking and the idea of unearned privilege. Some groups within society are more privileged just because at one point they were superior to their opposite. For example, men were superior to women so now when the two are competing for the same job with equal skill levels, employers are more likely to hire men since historically, they were built for the work force. Now that the concept of intersectionality has been introduced, it helps to diminish these stereotypes and think of our world as more complex than the simple binaries societies were once built on.
In conclusion, all the identity markers that make up a person’s identity, the power that is divided within society and the hierarchies of privilege that are expanded on to understand the world in all its complexities have made a path for people to better analyze and understand themselves, in order to better analyze and understand the people and the world around them.
