The Importance Of Interpersonal Conflict

There are many successful tools an individual can use to communicate effectively when facing interpersonal conflict. A person is sure to encounter conflict whether it is at work, among family and friends, or between relationship partners. Interpersonal conflict occurs when there is interference with a person’s effort to achieve a communicated goal by one or more individuals. Conflict can be managed in an effective way resulting in a deeper insight and connection. It is possible for interpersonal conflict to promote healthy and productive relationships. While watching an episode of the television series, Blackish, I identified an interpersonal conflict which occurred and will describe how it could have been handled effectively. It is important to have the knowledge of effectively handling interpersonal conflict because of the possibility of it causing discontent and aggression within relationships.
Handling interpersonal conflict takes patience, the willingness to listen, and effective strategies such as relationship maintenance behaviors. Relationships that experience conflict may be healthier and stronger than those who do not. The quality of a relationship does not depend on the number of conflicts it involves; it is based on how effectively the conflict is resolved. According to Bevan and Sole, “The ability to identify and competently manage conflict will improve the quality of your relationships and make relationships more satisfying for you and your partner (2014, Section 9.2). This quote shows the positive outcomes of managing conflict can have on your relationships.
