To have a healthy and working relationship, communication is an important part of having that and if you cannot communicate effectively you should not even be in a relationship with that person in the first place. In Hawaii Five-0, Steve and Danny are two cops from very different places who are forced to work together at first but they end up staying partners for years. Throughout the series if someone were to watch a few episodes they would question how Steve and Danny have been such good friends and partners all these years. According to Chapter 4 of the Interpersonal Communication textbook hearing is involuntary and listening is voluntary. So a lot of their relationship consists of hearing mostly and especially when they are at work because Danny yells at Steve a lot for his plans and actions. There was one episode when they were in the car and Danny tells Steve that he is an enabler and goes on about why he thinks that and Steve just pretends that he is listening and at the end he just goes and says “ Are you done?”. Now there are times in their relationship that Steve and Danny actually talk to each other and listen. One of those times comes when Danny has to stay at Steve’s house and Steve actually opens up to Danny and Danny actually listens to Steve. Now they both do hear and listen to each other in this relationship but they do not even need to speak to each other to know what is going on in each other’s head. In an example from self-fulfilling prophecy Steve and Danny were outside a suspect’s house and when they got into the car all Steve did was put both hands on the steering wheel and Danny knew right away what Steve was thinking of doing so he put on his seatbelt before Steve did anything stupid.
