The main thing that I learned was that the non-sworn professionals in the criminal justice field are crucial. Without them, the sworn officers wouldn’t be able to do their job at such a swift and effective way. With the constant change in society and technology the work that the RIIC does to keep the Lehigh Valley safe is so crucial. I also feel that this internship helped me learn a lot about myself. Working in a professional law enforcement environment for the first time really allowed me to “raise the bar” in regards to my behavior and professionalism as well as expectations. This internship really helped me prepare for the professional world and it also helped me recognize that the main goal of law enforcement is to help people regardless of their background.
What did you contribute to the organization? I would like to think that the biggest contribution I made, was assisting the RIIC personnel in whatever and anyway I could at any time. I grew a self-appreciation of my work since I could say my hand was involved in work that came across my desk, whether that was written or verbally state to me. I enjoyed assisting, learning, and applying what I have previously learned through my education and personal experiences to this internship.

Sometimes when an intern comes in and works with full time employees, the interns as somewhat looked frowned upon and not fully accept them. At the RIIC, it was the total opposite. I always felt welcome every time I walked through the doors and got along very well with everyone that worked there. Whenever someone arrived, they would be greatly politely and asked how their day/night was from the current or previous day. I think the best thing about the culture at the RIIC is that everyone was friends but they never let that get in between their work, that they needed to complete. I have never witnessed a situation where the personnel let their friendships come in the way of their job and that is often rare today in age. The attitudes of all the employees was always positive and motivational. You can instantly tell that everyone at the RIIC is passionate about their job which truly makes the work environment even better.
Did you feel that your employer was interested in your professional future? Every single person at the RIIC was truly interested in the fact that I wanted to pursue a non-sworn law enforcement profession. However, the personnel tried their best to incorporate various tasks that was both sworn and non-sworn, just so that I could get an idea of both sides. I always felt that my views and opinions were respected among the personnel and that a true interest was taken in my career path.
