When reflecting on my time at Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck (BHFS) that is rapidly approaching its closure, one word comes to my mind and that is “refined”. My time at BHFS has refined skills in the following: basic office protocol, off the cuff research, congressional research, legislative tracking/research, and daily professional interactions. Every semester BHFS receives hundreds of qualified applicants who wish to intern at BHFS. A key strength is having the opportunity work and learn at such a sought after firm, which I am incredibly grateful for the relationship the Hinckley Institute has with BHFS for me to be given this opportunity. Strength is the BHFS staff. The BHFS staff consists of former Congressman, former Chiefs of Staff, lawyers, professors, policy experts and many more impressive backgrounds. Being in an environment where there is such a diverse and knowledgeable backgrounds of employees is humbling. Another significant strength is the unique work environment, BHFS provides services for many sectors (outlined in paper one) which creates an opportunity to become knowledgeable in many different sectors.

Weaknesses of the Internship

It is difficult for me to think of “weaknesses”, there have been so many enjoyable moments and then there have been some frustrating moments. Every day was unique and presented new challenges. Some days were incredibly busy, some were very slow, but the key is to always make you useful. Although BHFS has an intern program, nobody was babysitting me or had “objectives” for me, we were here to make ourselves useful and provide support.

More importantly, they allowed me to better understand my own strengths and weaknesses, and how to better develop them. This understanding is essential to me as a future practitioner in the events industry. In this essay, I will discuss my own leadership style as “pacesetting” based on the self-assessment result proposed by Daniel Goleman (2000).
