The Importance Of Interest Groups

Interest groups are an important structure through which citizens in the United States bring to light their ideas, needs, and views known to elected officials. Americans can typically find an interest group that caters to their concerns regardless of how specialized they may be. While the majority of interest groups may not be politically active, most try to influence public policy and opinion.

An interest group is an association of people or organizations of shared values and common goals that influence public policy in their favor. Interest groups allow any citizen to identify with others of the same values thus giving them more power to influence policy makers.
Typically, interest groups fall into the following categories, political, social and economics.
