Information is poured out daily; the digital age has made it accessible to all. We lack the time to go through copious data; infographics represent the same boring data in an interesting and entertaining way. It communicates complex data beautifully, quickly and clearly. Cave paintings are considered to be the earliest form of infographics, depicting animals and other resources in the surrounding area (visual.ly). Similarly, the Egyptian hieroglyphics used symbols to tell stories of life, work and religion better that text would. Such ancient mediums of story telling through symbols are still contemporary, and can be seen widely in use today in this field. It has, of course, added other elements to display the information clearly.

Otto Neurath, an Austrian philosopher and co-founder of the Vienna Circle, with a team of artists and data specialists, created the first symbolic pictorial language for conveying information called Isotype (International System of Typographic Picture Education). It was the first abstract and visual representation of data, designed in a way, so that it was easy to understand. Isotype proved that when information is portrayed with human perception in mind, complex data can be more effectively and efficiently communicated to a wider audience.
Daniel Adams, the chief editor of I-shift community online, wrote in an article on infographics, that in print, the use of infographics were first seen in the US, in newspapers and magazines, namely Fortune magazine, the Chicago Tribune and the New York Times.
