Its safe to say that today, social media has left an impact on many. Social media has also been a vital tool for entertainment, work, politics, news and contact around the world. The question asked by many is: how much freedom should people have on social media? Should there be a filter controlling the opinions and the thoughts shared via social media?

Despite the fact that the social media such as Facebook, twitter, youtube and Instagram are highly used in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the media environment is tightly controlled. Users who use the internet to publish information should be fully aware of the publication and publishing laws of the 1980 which lists 16 types of information that should not be published on any type of media wether

"Last year eight cases were filed against Gulf News and most of them were about misunderstandings and some should not have gone to court from the beginning."

Self censorship was made because of a fuzzy policy and the multi-faceted restriction isn't forced by the legislature only but by individuals and foundations with religious convictions or social extreme. As self-censorship is the act of censoring or classifying one's own discussion. Its not correct that English language papers appreciate more freedom. Laws and requests are the same, it's only about picking a diverse point of news which suits foreign readers. This different point may give an impact that the English language press has more freedom.

However self censorship is increasing in the UAE as Sami Al Riyami, Editor-in-Chief of Al Emarat Al Youm, said: "Unfortunately, self-censorship is increasing in the press and is affecting press freedom to a certain extent. He also added that: "One of the main factors affecting press freedom is advertising domination. Eventually press freedom is affected when advertisers monitor the flow of their news in media outlets, especially in the press. Another factor is when newspapers' reporters practise self-censorship on their own work more than when government officials monitor the

Introduction I’m sure that many people these days have noted Mr. Trump’s battle or comments on Twitter have often been blown up into their faces by the media these days. In fact, it’s quite rare to find a news article that doesn’t include the infamous family name “Trump” either. It’s a constant ongoing battle between the Trump and media sources. After all, he had went from a big television personality to now becoming our president, which no one would have originally seen coming and is a particular nuisance to many as he both dislikes media and tends to make outrageous statements. Yet, many people within America and even outside of America tend to be attracted to this attention to Trump’s administration.…

Press in a society spreads information to people and helps inform them of important events. Free societies allow their press to publish anything because people have the right to information and opinions (on which to base their own) about their country or government. The controlled or censored press cannot publish anything and their responsibility is mainly focused on distributing government opinions and information. Society becomes either complacent and ignorant or angered and frustrated. If censorship is complete and no outside information enters the “closed system”, a population will most likely believe what is provided but as soon as “outside” information enters, the population will start to doubt that what is provided to them by the…

The expansion of media and access to publishing one’s own ideas has also restricted the government’s ability to even attempt to participate in the censorship of media. Now close to the entire US population has access to technology which can be used to share their ideas. There is also no cause to censor media as there is no direct consequence of the loss of life due…

In recent times the government has its own ways to convince the population into censorship. Like in 1984, the people willingly give up their rights, and today it is for their own “protection”. “The sinister fact about literary censorship in England is that it is largely voluntary”(Orwell). As stated by The Independent, “The prime minister has looked to introduce sweeping and deep changes to the way the internet works”(Independent), all of this in the name of stopping terrorism. Censorship is also available in the United States as well.…

Censorship is about deciding on what people can and cannot see within a society chosen by a select group. Censorship is at the heart of the dystopian world of Fahrenheit 451; firemen start the fires rather than extinguishing them. The firemen in this novel are the ones who enforce censorship by burning down any houses if books are known to be present inside. The firemen burn books because of the endless amount of power and knowledge displayed in these novels, which is feared by the government. It is believed that by burning books it therefore removes any possible threats towards the government.…

The word censorship defines as blocking something from being heard, seen or read. I believe that there was a time that when censorship should be appropriate for the First Amendment. Although the First Amendment is about the free flow of information, ideas, and opinions that can be expressed in our society by responsible citizens, however, our government should be able to regulate the speech through the court consistently to determine if the government’s reason outweighs the importance of our democratic freedoms with ethical responsibilities. Censorship can also be an act of changing a message, including the change of deletion (complete removal of the message of the news or what was said), between the sender and the receiver. Censorship can be used for the good, by being ethically responsible.…

Censorship in the media has been a controversial topic ever since the founding of the United States. From the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798 that restrict the rights of immigrants, under the John Adams presidency, to the Edward Snowden and NSA scandal in 2013 that concerned government surveillance of its citizens and government transparency. These controversies have caused a public backlash against media censorship of any kind but there are aspects of media censorship that protect society rather than hurt it. Instead of hiding government secrets or preventing certain political ideas from being expressed, media censorship can be used to hide criminal’s and victim’s names as well to hide sensitive and graphic images or video from the public.…

When a person has no choice but to trust what they hear, news becomes a dangerous topic, or more accurately transforms from sure fact to discrete fabrications. Once people become complacent, there is no one to question whether the information people are being fed is truthful at all. It remains true to this day that “Because media is such a large part of people’s lives today...if...information is not being given in full or truthfully, then the society is left uneducated” (“Censorship Effects on Society” 1). In countries where only one source of information is available to the public, it is almost routine that the information is biased and filled with political propaganda. In reducing the amount of sources, the people have no other opinions presented to them than the ones that the government wants them to have.…

In past years the use of technology has changed the way people receive and view the media. These changes have allowed people to have quick access to information about the world as well as allowing people to have an almost endless expanse of new media and news to analyze and receive information from. However, with this new influx of media regulations must be put in place in order to protect the general public and guarantee that the media is fair and open to the public at large. Examples of these regulations the government has attempted to impose would be the Equal Time Rule, the Right of Reply, and the Political Editorializing Rule. These regulations allowed the government to protect the public; However, regulating the media can create unfair…

The government excuses itself from these obvious human rights violations by claiming it is against Jordanian law (even though the law contradicts the constitution) or that censorship is necessary for the purpose of national security. One such instance was in the case of Nahed Hattar who was a well known writer who published an anti-ISIS cartoon that depicted God’s face, which is against Islamic teaching, leading to his arrest. Hattar was charged with “inciting sectarian strife” because of his cartoon even though it was intended as a criticism of ISIS, but was later murdered outside the courthouse where he was to stand trial. Other cases in which journalists were arrested were those of Ghazi al-Mrayat and Atef Joulani, the former being charged “with exposing the country to hostile acts, exposing the country’s citizens to revengeful and aggressive acts, and harming relations with a foreign country” while the latter was charged with “defaming an official body,” but they released and not convicted of any crimes. Even though neither was convicted, these examples showcase how the government attempts to censor speech and what they consider to be dangerous speech, such as simply questioning the actions of the…
