Benefits Of Occupational Therapy

There is no doubt that most people have a difficult time choosing a major in their lifetime. It is important to choose a right major because when someone doesn’t like his/her job after graduating, the individual could have poor performance and ultimately become unemployed. All the years the individual had been in school were wasted, so it is important to choose an interesting major that they are passionate about. Therefore, for our advocacy project; Elisha Hu, Sophia Chan and myself decided to focus on advocating the occupational therapy program to people and inform them there is a great major out there that they too might be interested in someday. I received responses from some OT students and one faculty member who were willing to partake in my video. In order to make this project happen, I used my phone to videotape several occupational therapy students and one occupational therapy faculty member, to share their perspective about the OT profession. Firstly, they will describe what is occupational therapy and how occupational therapists help people with disabilities to get back to their normal activities and the occupations that are meaningful to them. After watching the video that was made by me, people will know that occupational therapy is a career that could be suited to their own personalities and abilities. People will be excited about the diverse nature of the work and the effect that meaningful activities or occupations can have in helping patients to improve their goals and quality of lives. After watching video, people will recognize that occupational therapy is focusing more on evaluating and improving a person’s ability to gain their independence to accomplish their daily activities after an injury or physical impairment. The primary goal of the occupational therapist is helping patients improve their abilities to engage better and more independent in their daily living activities. On the other hand, physical therapy focuses on evaluating and diagnosing movement dysfunctions and treating patient’s injury directly. The primary goal of the physical therapist is helping patients to increase their overall mobility, to become more independent and safer. Furthermore, people will learn that occupational therapists can work with immigrant populations to help them to adapt to their new environment to improve their occupational performance. By this way, people who like to be more creative and think out of the box, will realize that occupational therapy is a field that fit them to incorporate their interests into a practical world. Then, they can successfully perform at their highest ability
