The Homeland Security page explains how the current system works and states, "The present immigration detention system is sprawling and needs more direct federal oversight and management. While ICE has over 32,000 detention beds at any given time, the beds are spread out over as many as 350 different facilities largely designed for penal, not civil, detention. ICE employees do not run most of these. The facilities are either jails operated by county authorities or detention centers operated by private contractors." This is what they currently do. However, the department was to change for the future and even states what they hope to accomplish. Others state that people in the detention centers deserve to be there and everything that they are facing because they decided to come into the country without the proper form of documentation or have overstayed their welcome. This commentary, on how people deserve to be mistreated, is not right. Everyone deserves to be treated as human beings and should never have to endure what they are and can once they have entered the immigration detention centers. Most of the individuals in detention centers do not have any type of record, they are not criminals, and all they wanted was a better life for themselves and their families. If they do not have criminal backgrounds, then why are we allowing them to sit inside a detention center without any rights? In the above sections, through the article of the Associated Press, it states how many people are detained for months, and even years, at a time. They are not being deported "or sent back" to their home country, if this is not happening and it is costing hundreds of dollars, then why are they still in custody?
