Michelle Agins Analysis

November 9th 2016 was a mournful day for the majority of the people that I know, including myself. I believe that Michelle Agins analysis may have been accurate only in alignment with the sample that she has chosen. When first listening to this article I was astonished at the fact that those who “persevere” as opposed to the “coddled” were less affected. Her article may have said one thing but the looks of my Facebook account, and the depressing look I watched in my morning commute to work said the complete opposite. To understand her conclusion I had to put myself in the position of an immigrant. Most immigrants that come here tend to excel more in school, and are more motivated to achieve because they are fleeing a harsher life or maybe even …show more content…
What’s disturbing to me to say the least is that the members of the Presidents Society, an organization that I would have joined if not for my working schedule (which many of them do not have) didn’t even desire to discuss the election. In my opinion that is the epitome of selfishness. Even if this election does not affect you personally, the amount of hate and disunity that has spread like wildfire in this country since the day Donald Trump has announced this election should awaken even the most ignorant of us. I am proud to know that students of the Ivy League schools, where individuals are deemed to be upper class, were visibly affected by this election. I too wish I could run and scream and cry the day after this terrible election. The amount of times I cried that day was too many to count. This election shows that a Nation that is thought to have come so far hasn’t gone anywhere at all. The fact that someone who has represented so much hatred, bigotry, sexism and so much more, will be the leader of our nation in a few short weeks should alarm every college …show more content…
To raise our children in? Since November 8th there have been over 100 attacks on Muslim’s alone. I used to be a bank teller and many students would have cashier’s checks issued for tuition for these top Ivy League schools like NYU, and Columbia. Nine times out of ten the money used for those cashier’s checks came directly from a foreign wire. I point that out to note that A large population of these students who aim for these top schools are immigrants themselves. Their families send them here to obtain high education and make a better life. So I do see how the Ivy League students can be deemed as more affected, but I do wish the writer took a larger sample. I am deeply ashamed with the ideology of students being unnerved by something as gruesome as a Donald Trump election. Regardless of your political stance look at was his election has done to America so far. I will end my analysis with this a favorite quote of mine by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, “An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his indivulaistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity”. In response to Ms.Karac, a LaGuardia Alumni who quoted “If I become a good engineer, every country will want me”. What about everyone

increased dramatically through immigration during the last few years and the country cannot keep up economically and socially. According to Roy Beck, “Based on opinion polls, it appears that most Americans consider themselves net losers and believe that the United States has become ‘a nation of too many immigrants’” (446). Beck states that “there are four national goals that Americans expect to achieve and illegal immigration is partly the cause for many Americans not attaining these goals” (450). They are: “(1) a middle-class society; (2) equal opportunity for the descendants of slavery; (3) harmonious and safe communities; and (4) a protected and restored natural environment…” (450).…

David Cole in “Five Myths about Immigration” simply takes about the five common myths of immigration in the United States. The five myths being that immigrants are overrunning the country, immigrants take jobs from natural born citizens, immigrants drain societies resources, aliens and immigrants don’t assimilate to our culture, and immigrants are not entitled to constitutional rights. All of these myths are displayed to be completely wrong and were created out of ignorance fueled by fear/lack of education on the many benefits immigrants have on United States society, economy, culture, and unity of our nation. Immigrants do not and are not overrunning the country in fact first-generation immigrants make up only had made up in 1990 only made…

The book Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin was the book read for my summer reading and I suggest this to readers who like to read emotional novels that are fairly long for ages fourteen or fifthteen. This story is about a girl named Liz who went to meet her friend at the mall and then died in a hit and run. She is then wakes up on a boat with many older people and realized that everyone is being shipped to elsewhere where people age backwards after they died. She then must learn how to let go of her life on earth and deal with her grandma all at the same time. Overall the whole concept of the book was very intriguing.…

Immigration can have several meanings to different people. For one immigrant, it was a representation of a new life. “Are we a nation that tolerates the hypocrisy of a system where workers who pick our fruit and make our beds never have a chance to get right with the law? Or are we a nation that gives them a chance to make amends, take responsibility, and give their kids a better future.” (Navarrette, 3) This quote as in November 2014, Obama opens doors to the immigrants by giving them a chance to live the American life. Also back in 2008, President George W. This Nation consists of a melting pot of race and culture primarily due to immigration. Many individuals perceive immigration with a negative connotation. However, the problems do not reside with the people who persist on trying to come in to America but the process of doing so. The policies to obtain a visa should be changed because the process last too long. Trying to receive U.S. citizenship holds in a matter of who gets lucky.…

This year I learned I am the result of generations trapped in unfortunate situations that nevertheless resulted in my parents’ successful immigration to America. Living in NYC, a true polyglot society, it is easy to forget we have not always enjoyed a democratic society’s possibilities. In fact, we are surprised the USSR’s countless famines, genocides, wars, and simple violence had not killed our families decades ago. Education saved them. They realized intellectual excellence brought respect and recognition from a society that wanted them gone.…

Discrimination is an unavoidable oppression that transpires across the world. The U.S., a country known as the “Land of Opportunity,” is perceived by immigrants, people of different origin from different countries, as a gateway to obtaining a better life. However, immigrants may encounter many obstacles and ill-treatments that will keep them from progressing. “Our Fear of Immigrants,” an article by Jeremy Adams Smith, unveils why the United States government and some of its native-born citizens are prejudiced towards immigrants. Smith’s proclamation is to correct people’s irrational fear of immigrants and to develop a higher sense of empathy in people.…

The immigrants that entered the United States from the 1870’s through the 1920’s proved that they were different from any immigrants that came before them. This generation of immigrants was the most diverse group of people to enter this country during this period. Not only were they from different ethical backgrounds, they practiced different religions, their rules of life were different from ours, and among many other things. While the immigrants had, a hard time living in the US, they still defeated the odds and achieved economic success in multiple institutions. Unfortunately, because these groups of people changed the dynamics of the United States, Americans took that as a threat to the social, economic, religious, political, and overall…

Over the years immigration has continued to be a discussion of intense national debate. The effect of immigration has been looked at as positive and negative. The economy and government have been affected in a multitude of ways. The immigrants are offered sources for work and also economic support for them and their families, yet many American citizens are without jobs and struggle to keep a household. Also, many Americans do feel as if they are being pushed to the side when it comes to availability in work sources and the taxes people pay are going to the non natives who don’t work but only live off of others benefits.…

For its reputation as the “land of opportunity,” America has made the path to finding that opportunity remarkably unclear for its immigrant populations. Most Americans would agree that some level of education is necessary for success or eminence, with higher education usually leading to more career opportunities and connections. However, state and federal policies concerning benefits have historically made education difficult to access for undocumented immigrants. Some argue that the United States has no obligation to its undocumented populations, pointing out the illegality of their presence, but regardless of an individual’s citizenship status, the fact that he lives in and thus contributes to American society cannot be ignored.…

Illegal Immigrants Should be Provided a Pathway to Citizenship The American dream can defined as the idea that all American citizens have a chance for great success and happiness in life. To many, America is viewed as a place where opportunity is around every corner. Not every country offers the same freedoms as the United States, so immigrants travel from their country to another in hopes of obtaining a better life for not only them, but their families as well. Not every person that comes over is legal, however.…
