I was walking across campus, and I pass a group of male college students harassing another male student who clearly does not fit the stereotypical “dominant” image of masculinity. As I pass by, I hear members of the group call the student a “pussy faggot.” Being I am well versed in masculinity studies, I decide this is a teachable moment to end ignorances. I would approach them with different possible issues which stems from their actions, language, and why should change their ways. I would touch base on where the behavior stems from, the goals they may achieve by doing such, why they may deem it to be okay to do so, and how these types of incidents contributes to a larger social issue. I plan on making …show more content…
I would proceed to say, from a research called What is hegemonic Masculinity? written by Mike Donaldson, “is about the winning and holding of power and the formation (and destruction) of social groups in that process....establishes and maintains its domination.(Donaldson, Mike)” Therefore, your actions would not typically be done individually, but more commonly in a group. When you are alone there is no real reason to establish one’s dominance. It is when a man or a boy are in a male dominant group they are part taking in something an individual(s) may not prefer not to do so, but feels they cannot stand against the situation. If the individual may feel, if they were to go against the guys that they will lose their masculinity in the process. As it was said in my Soc 328 class, Men can only give other men power. Being a man in our society seem to be important if you are not given that power that society has engrained in young men 's minds that they are not worthy to sit down a the big boys table. It has become a goal that drives the notion that you are not a “real” man if you do not act, do, or say such things to be what history has …show more content…
Janet Halley stated in the book, Dude, You’re a Fag,
“How those who are thrown out of the discursive and legal category of “heterosexual” lose definitional power over their own identity. Much as the threat of the “fag” disciplines boys into certain behavioral practices, the threat of being excluded from the category “heterosexual” functions as a bribe to keep people silent and thus reinforces the false unity of the category itself.”(Pascoe, C. J. Dude).
By achieving this goal is placing a power struggle over the victim by using homosexual terms against them whether they identify as homosexual or not. This power struggle is seen with groups of males against a single person. If the person does not follow up to the society’s masculine ideology those groups of males reinforce it which gives them the power that they need to stand above. Standing above other males gives them the confidence in places that they may lack from ideology. This is called the fag discourse. It is based on the mere fact that if any display of emotions, involvement nonviolence sports, etc., is seen as weakness. Anything that is not seen as Heteronormative will receive backlash for no good reason. The behavior that is show is somehow deemed
