Jim Martin is trying to make in his article, “Be Who You Is.” He begins by saying that we cannot all have the same vocation, and in order to find our own we need to focus on our teleological identities; what we want for ourselves in the long run. Fr. Martin indicates that a major misconception amongst those struggling to find their vocation is that they are attached to the well known stories of others like Mother Theresa and Thomas Merton. The point Fr. Martin is trying to make is that we are not all called to be these people; we are called follow our own unique vocations. In an excerpt from his book Identity and the Lord’s Supper, William Spohn also discusses the role of identity. He points out that our entire identity affects both our actions and relationships based on how mature we are. Spoon feels that those who are more mature show integrity and pride towards their identities. On the other hand, he feels those that are immature act differently around different people in order to hide parts of their identity. Spohn also introduces the idea of Christian identity, which asks “Whose am I?” instead of “Who am I?” It focuses more on the notion of community of being a Christian and all that it encompasses. Essentially, I can quickly describe myself as a girl born into an American, upper middle class family with a brother and a sister. This has led me to be very independent with a Type A personality. Existentially, I have made choices such as being a very involved athlete and attending Walsh. These choices have led me to be dedicated and focused when I want to succeed at something.
