I started learn about the history of my ancestors and slavery when I was in high school. When I started becoming conscious I asked many questions like why Africans have so much self hate towards their darkskin color? Was it because they were only taught that the light skin is better? Or can it be the results of not knowing their history and identity? Many of us go to school mastering European history, without having any idea who you are and where you came from. In Africa the educational and my environment shaped my identity in a unhealthy form. It effected me, because growing up I did not know now who i am. I developed a very low self esteem, I wanted to be lighter and prettier. In most magazines growing up, in Africa it was very rare to see a Darskin women on the covers. It causes many of us to have identity issues, women would bleach their skin afraid that their husband might leave them for a lighter skin women. These all goes back to the identity issues.
