We are born, we live and we die. These are the basic phases of human life but there is much more to life than just these three basic ideas. Each individual goes through a continuous developmental process that helps shape us into a unique independent individual. Our personal experiences as children are what helps mature into proper adults. We learn reasoning along with social responsibility and as we move into adulthood, we learn to improve our sociocultural development. All these practices developed differently in each individual depending on their cultural upbringing as well as the influence parents have on the child’s upbringing. Now at the age of thirty-one I am back in college in the pursuit of a Master’s Degree in Science and Nursing. It has taken me many years to figure out how my life should be and where I want to go. Many would analyze this and say that the lack of a proper parental presence in my life that caused me to become lost. Others would say that statistically I had no chance, being Hispanic with only one parent and living in what now is known as low-income neighborhood. I would have to argue against all these and say that I beat the odds that were against me. I knew that my mother could not spend too much time with me because she had to put a roof over our heads and food on the table. I knew my neighborhood was dangerous but I still never got into gangs nor did I do drugs. I failed to fall into the pressures of sex to be popular or have false love from a boy. What I did do is graduate High School and became a Medical Assistant to make my mother proud. Now I have gone back to College to make me proud and finally get the degree I know I deserve. My childhood was fun and it thought me a lot about loving your child unconditionally and most importantly having a positive affect and presence in their life. I know it was not an ideal upbringing according to all the experts and all the research. All I know is I got lucky and because of this when I get married and have children I will know what is right and what is wrong. I hope to provide an appropriate atmosphere at home were my children know they can come to me with fears, doubts and questions about anything. I will strive to be present physically and in mind to all of my child’s
