In 1920, women were promised the right to vote. In 1965, African-Americans were given the right to vote. For 239 years, people have been given a voice to speak out and give their opinions. It is stated in the State of the Union speech that we have this right. In Franklin D. Roosevelt’s speech, “From the Four Freedoms”, he states that we have a right to speak out; “...we look forward to a world founded upon the four essential human freedoms. The first is freedom of speech and expression- everywhere in the world”. With this right, we have been given the opportunity to change the way our lives work. Through voting and speaking out people have been able to elect presidents, change people’s pay, and change many other instances. Freedom of speech is not offered across the globe, so we must use our voices to do what is right. There are many examples of people standing up and speaking for what is right. As seen in the “Proud to be” video, people are able to stand up for what they believe, “ We have been called many things, but one we will never be-” That is the last phrase the narrator says before zooming in on a single football team helmet; A Redskin football helmet. The Indians are able to use their voices to try and change the team name because they believe it wrong and against their culture. Getting that dream job to be a scientist or a teacher, the voice to shape the country you want to be in, and the freedom to go as you please, that is the opportunity that America provides. Opportunities are handed to us on a silver platter contributing to the “American Dream”, are you willing to do work hard enough to reach up and grab it? That farmer, the doctor, the people in the large city, the scientists, the children from the commercial as well as everyone else in America have taken that platter and grabbed the opportunity.
