Some might think that it’s ironic that my last name is Hope, knowing all of the struggles that I’ve been through in the last three years. I encountered a lot of obstacles throughout my high school career. I faced struggles throughout freshman, sophomore, and the beginning of junior year. Even though these obstacles broke me down, they also shaped me into the person that I am today. I attended a charter school from preschool until the end of the eighth grade. After completing middle school, I was the recipient of a four year fine arts scholarship from American Heritage School (AHS). At first, I had a difficult time adjusting to the culture of a very elite private school. I had to make several major personal adjustments in order to …show more content…
Cancer is a prevalent disease in my family. I lost my great grandmother to cancer during high school and my dad was terminally ill with cancer during the first two years of me attending high school. Unfortunately, he also lost his battle towards the end of my sophomore year. His illness had a tremendous effect on me because he battled five different types of cancers over the course of 15 years and eventually died from leukemia. I spent most of my time from the eighth grade to the end of my sophomore year caring for my dad because of the severity of his illness. Even though this was sad and overwhelming at times, I am glad that I was as involved in my dad 's care because we were extremely …show more content…

As I prepare for graduation and to start attending college, I strongly believe that all of my life experiences have prepared me for success. My key life lessons are that nothing beats hard work and if you treat others with respect, they will generally treat you with respect. Hard work and effort are the main aspects that lead to “lucky” things happening. Good things don’t just fall into people’s laps, the ones that have the most “luck” generally are those that put in the most effort and work. Also, I have learned that when you truly respect those around, they will respect you back and life is much easier when you aren’t doing things behind each other’s backs.…

I believe that my personal background, and my success despite the adversity that I have faced is an essential part of who I am. The first of my struggles came from being born to two teenage parents without at least a high school education, and although my mother went on to get a GED and to college my father did not. Many people in my family had issues with substance abuse and addictions including my father. Although, I was raised by my mother and grandmother, my father’s actions and behaviors negatively impacted my life. My father was verbally and mentally abusive to the people around him, especially when he used alcohol.…

It is the morning of July 4th, 2008: I groan as my mother gently whispers, “teneshi yene mar (Get up honey)”. Struggling I open my eyes and notice the trembling cabin, I turn to my mother with a look of concern and she reaches out her hand and squeezes my own looking up at me, “we are going to be okay Mar”. A couple of moments later our plane has landed, we gather up our belongings and make our way towards the exit filled with people attached to their screens and MP3 players. The airport is filled with an undercurrent of anticipation, impatience, and boredom; bodies scramble back and forth from one gate to another. My mother, attempting to balance three children, clasps my hand, holds my little brother to her waist and calls back to my older…

Overcoming my Struggles As a little boy, going to bed was the best part of the night. It is when your eyes are hanging low and you are doing everything you can to stay awake to hear a story that your mother reads to you before she tucks you in bed. Hearing and understanding words as a little boy was not that hard for me. I could comprehend words and say them, but as I started to go to school my parents knew something was not right. In my opinion, my struggles with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) continue to be a challenge with the struggles I had before I found out about my diagnoses, finding out about my Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) changing the way I did things, and continuing to overcome my challenges I have with Attention Deficit…
