The conflict regarding the utilization of the honor code can be seen throughout the school system, ranging from even elementary, to the college level. With students feeling increased pressure to succeed and little obligation to turn in their peers, honor codes have fallen out of step with values of the modern college student. Codes such as these are in place to keep young students honest and hardworking. In the recent years these codes have been violated significantly. The question lies within the board of students and within the student body if these codes are in use and if they should be revised or eliminated.…
The uprising conflict regarding the usage of honor codes being apart of school systems, from elementary schools to colleges. Some argue that honor codes are ineffective while others believe the contrary. The recognition of getting a high grade on a test using one’s knowledge is more delightful than knowing the answers are someone else’s. Honor code systems gives students fairness and punishments for the actions they chose to make. In fact my school’s honor code should be maintained because it promotes a positive academic environment, lowers the percentage of academic dishonesty, and it easily adapts to the school environment.…
In the case study A Matter of Honor, Sheila Allison is an African American Newton High School senior who is popular and athletic. In addition, she is a good student and received a congressional appointment to a national military academy. Soon after she received the news, Sheila is accused of plagiarizing a book review in an honors English class. Regardless of her extenuating circumstance, her teacher Mrs. Durnitz believes Sheila should be responsible for violating the plagiarism policy. The district’s policy is listed in the student handbook and states that students found guilty of plagiarism must receive a failing grade plus repeat the course.…
In the poem Beowulf, the main character Beowulf shows strength, courage, and leadership. Throughout the poem, Beowulf personifies Anglo-Saxon honor and acts accordingly in all of his interactions with others. Beowulf is heroic in his deeds, wise in his leadership, and always follows the honor code. This honor code was extremely important in Anglo-Saxon society and one of the main themes of the poem explores the negative consequences of not following the code. The monster Grendel exemplifies everything considered dishonorable in Anglo-Saxon society.…
Preventing the immoral actions while teaching the trust, the school had to maintain but fully explain about the honor codes. From the few schools, there was an already disputation towards the honor codes such as ‘students did not fully understand the role of an honor code; many saw it as another rule to obey“(Source B) which would lead to elimination of honor code, simultaneously loss of both students and school’s trust. Moreover, other problem would be students’ view towards the establishment in honor code that it might lead “skeptical” view which would lead them to be cheaters. On the other hand, this problem might be resolve due to the reality that the students had to face so that “signing a piece of paper will suddenly cause a cheater to…
Source C explains the credibility of an honor code. Before establishing one, it would be important to know if one would even be effective. Donald L. McCabe, a professor at Rutgers University, studied that…
For numerous academic institutions, honor codes are the foundations that strive to mitigate surreptitious, unfair actions. From cheating to plagiarizing, these sets of code execute a block of repercussions that insists on fostering integrity. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of honor systems is a highly controversial issue; proponents proclaim that these rules do cultivate truthfulness, while opponents highlight the ineffective, authoritarian consequences of these honor codes. Honor codes may appear consequential in preventing immoral actions, but these protocols constitute vastly more ramifications than benefits. Thus, my school should abolish its honor system.…
In a recent article published by The New York Times, it was reported that rape victims at the Mormon-run Brigham Young University claim that the school uses the Honor Code they are forced to sign before beginning school there to punish them for the circumstances surrounding their assaults. The Honor Code “requires modest dress on campus and prohibits drinking, drug use, same-sex intimacy, indecency and sexual misconduct” (Healy). Since many sexual assaults on college campuses very often involve alcohol or other drugs, the victims state that “they had faced Honor Code investigations into whether they drank alcohol, took drugs or had consensual sex in the time surrounding their assaults” (Healy). One woman was actually suspended from Brigham…
At Texas A&M, undergraduates and graduates wanting to get a higher education go by the Aggie Code of Honor, “An Aggie does not lie, cheat or steel or tolerate those who do.” (Texas A&M). This quote is one thing Aggies follow and hold very dearly and close them. As I almost complete my undergraduate degree at Texas A&M I understand the Aggie honor code more and more each day as to what it means to me. To me the Aggie honor code is important because it allows me to be proud of a college campus that not only provides a higher education, but a university that provides great communication and network between all students and also be respected all around the world by the great Aggie Network and that till this day and in the future will always be…
As previously stated there is a code of honor basically in all forms of life. The novel shows Hispanic cultural references as well as what the people believe. In America people have more free reign to do as they feel which would be related to free will but in Hispanic culture they believe more of fate and a destiny and that their path has already been laid out from God himself. Personally there are some connections that I have with the novel such as a code but there are times in which they can not simply be followed. One being thou shalt not kill, if I was to be threatened and my life was in the enemy hands I would fight in order to survive at all cost.…
Having an honor code system at a school can help administrate and better the academic community by ensuring everyone is upholding to noble behavior. Because others are required to report suspected violations, it discourages an individual from cheating, plagiarizing, or any other academic dishonesty. Every student should demonstrate their understanding by establishing optimal academic work, hence, making all academic work at the highest standard. The School of Nursing Honor Code encourages me to be the best that I can be by showing honorable behavior academically and in the community. All my responsibilities will be completed to the best of my ability whereas all my problems will be solved morally and ethically.…
I am truly honored to be selected by my teachers for consideration to become a member of the National Honor Society. Being nominated to be a member of the National Honor Society is an honor in itself. It shows me that I have achieved my goal to work hard and stand out among my peers. This is something that I have been looking forward to this year in school. I believe that National Honor Society do great things to change society, make great leaders and that I can be a part of it.…
The honor code is a list that we as Christians should live our life according to. The honor code for Oral Roberts University could be called the students commandments that they must carry out during their time here and hopefully the rest of their lives. The purpose of the honor code is to give us students a foundation to abide by. The honor code to me represents what an ideal Christian should do by making us pledge to try and grow every day spiritually.…
How would one come to a realization of the importance of honor if one never lives within its boundaries? How would one hold upon their own beliefs even while walking the lonely and forgotten path? How would one understand the importance of each action if one does not know its reaction? In today's society, honor is being disband by millennials. They no longer desire to become those heroes of the past who value their own honor.…
There was a time when I experienced the relationship between honor and duty at the Citadel. It happened during second semester in my freshman year. I took a challenging engineering class. It was about coding using C++ computer language. I had experience about coding before because I took Computer Science as my minor.…
