This code helps maintain the academic integrity for the university. It is upheld by an honor board and members of this board include students, faculty and administrators. The code was written by a similar group of people who helped establish a code as “an appropriate response to the changes in technology and changing cultural norms” (“Honor Code at Hofstra-Integrity”). Many universities have created punishments as well that have serious discipline for these actions. Plagiarism defined by the St. Martins Guide to Writing “is the unattributed use of someone else’s words or ideas”. The university sets a standard for the students and faculty to follow, but professors can choose to add more rules for the students to follow. The University of Colorado at Boulder also has plagiarism listed in their honor code. They give examples of what could be considered; “failing to use quotation marks when directly quoting from a source; failing to document distinctive ideas from a source; fabricating or inventing sources; and copying information from computer-based sources” ( “Academic Integrity Policy- Plagiarism”). Plagiarism is still a part of college culture even though universities do their best to warn students of the repercussions. According to plagiarism.org, 36% of undergraduate students have admitted to plagiarizing. SUNY Potsdam also has plagiarism listed in their Honor Code as one of the first standards of Academic Integrity. Many times students are confused on how to avoid plagiarism. The universities often times offer classes and advice in places like a writing center to help students avoid making the fatal mistake of using someone’s work as their own. Technology is now being used to help limit the amount of offenses by students.
