What can I do to help, and who should I help first? In times of need, our families are there to help us no matter what happens. But, for a lot of people that is not always the case. Sometimes, there is no one around to help them, and sometimes, the only help a person will get is from a stranger. It is very difficult to decide whether to help those in the community versus those around the world. It is hard to determine who needs more help and who needs the most help. I am grateful that my parents are kind enough to pay for my college tuition, so I do not have to worry about anything financially related. However, I do have time to give. I volunteer twice a month with Alpha Epsilon Delta, which is a pre-medical co-ed fraternity. Daybreak is a homeless shelter in Macon, GA. I have donated time in my city, state, country and internationally. Through the many opportunities that I have had for community service, I have been able to broaden my views, and look outside my community at how others experience our world. At a young age, I was taught to do things for the greater good, my family has always given back whether it is donating food and clothes or adopting a family for Christmas. Growing up I have received assistance because at times my mother and I needed help so I personally know how much of an impact a small act of kindness can have and that is why I decided to join the Bakersfield Police Explorer program, which is community service based volunteer work. Getting into this program required various steps such as entrance testing, background check, and an interview. I wanted to be apart of this program as a way to test the waters of a career in law enforcement, helping out in the community, and to develop as a person.…

An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…
