High school is usually when many adolescents become even more involved in sports programs. This is generally because it provides scholarships and it is also enjoyable. However, there is an ongoing debate about whether sports programs should be taken out of the academic curriculum so students can focus more on their studies. There are many people who believe sports in schools are a waste of time; however, others are opposed and feel it is beneficial to our students. So, should sports classes be sacrificed in high school so students can concentrate on academics? I argue that high school sport programs should not be sacrificed because they help students stay healthy, develop life skills, and achieve academic success.
First of all, staying active will help keep students healthy, which is a growing problem across the country. In the words of Lucy Filppu, “Today’s generation of children is fighting the worst obesity epidemic in history.” For many children, the physical education they receive in school is the only time they are active, even more so in this technological age. Sports teach them to be leaders and work with others. Athletes learn how to make team decisions quickly and effectively which will in turn help them later in the workplace and in life. It encourages them to do their best in both their sport and their school work. Those students can later become examples to their peers and others of the importance of sports and staying involved. These student athletes also take initiative and apply it in the classroom. Sports make students learn responsibility by teaching them to manage their time wisely among other useful resources.
