Heroes are portrayed throughout films and novels, many characteristics help add to the heroes and help them throughout their quest. Heros go through quests and have to undertake certain challenges. These are cut into sections, such as Separation, Initiation, and Return. These can be broken down even further. Sling Blade I believe portrays the main character, Karl, well. Karl is the hero in the film. Many would say he was an anti-hero. He does not do things a hero would usually do, but he still accomplishes his hurdles and sacrifices himself for his friends.

Karl begins his Initiation with the Road of Trials. Doyle stays at Linda’s house and he begins to abuse Linda. Doyle being drunk at the time and pushes Linda, Frankie flings everything and anything at Doyle to get him away. Few days after, Doyle comes back and says Karl has to leave and Frankie has to do what he says. This frustrates Karl, because he doesn’t like the way Doyle barks at Frankie. This is Reaching Rock Bottom, Karl can’t help Frankie. He doesn’t think of himself for a split second, he just worries about Frankie and Linda. After reaching rock bottom comes, Receiving a Gift, Frankie gets all of Karl’s books, Karl wants Frankie to read up on all the things he has read over the years. Karl gives Vaughn money for Linda, because she let him stay in their garage and believed in him. He believes he should give back and help Linda. Also, so Linda and Karl don’t have to depend on Doyle for paying bills anymore. Karl’s actions tell the viewers something is going to happen, because Karl is giving away all his stuff. The Ultimate Boon happens. This is what the hero/anti-hero achieves. Karl ends up killing Doyle with a Lawnmower blade, because he doesn’t want Frankie or Linda to live in fear. He does this for his friends and not himself. He calls the police himself and tells them everything he had
