Stewart Parnell, his brother Michael Parnell, and Mary Wilkerson were indicted on 76 counts linked to intentionally shipping peanut products that were knowingly laced with salmonella (Basu, 2014). Stewart Parnell was an executive of the Virginia- based Peanut Corporation of America, and charged with the day to day oversight of plant operations. In an email between a plant manager and Stewart Parnell advised the plant manager to “SHIP IT” after he was informed of the salmonella infected peanut products (Basu, 2014). According to Moni Basu’s CNN article, “The 2008-2009 salmonella outbreak killed nine people, sickened at least 714 others nationwide and resulted in a huge food recall that cast a pall over one of America 's favorite foods: peanut butter”. The food industry has an obligation to manufacture and sell food that safe and pathogens free. The “Government agencies are responsible for setting food safety standards, conducting inspections, ensuring that standards are met, and maintaining a strong enforcement program to deal with those who do not comply with standards” (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2015, para. 1).
